IMHO, everything beyond round ground/filed is just splitting hairs!

Getting a chainsaw chain cutter sharp enough to cut moderately is not rocket science with all the aids and tools available nowadays.

First time trying these pferd three square files, took a little to get the angle right but got the hang of it now. More aggressive beak then the Husqvarna c85 chain but similar angle, cuts ridiculously well through spruce and poplar but I suppose most chains do.
Very interesting.

Most people use those files for ‘traditional’ ‘square’ profiled cutters, but ‘X-cut’ and ‘Hexa’ have opened up all kinds of variations.

Nothing new gets invented without trying new things!

Please let us know how that profile holds up and performs over time.

As the saying goes there's more than one way to skin a cat. That's what I found interesting about this thread, what works for one may not work for another. I do not cut hardwood so perhaps can get away with a more aggressive profile. All my other saws are round filed because it's faster and easier to do. But it's fun to experiment!

If you’d like it to truly go fast and last, check out the square ground and square filed threads. The idea is to try to get the corner of the file up in the corner of the tooth and file down and out on an angle. You’re filing flat across the middle of the tooth. It will work, but the beak won’t hold up.

Stihl Rapid Duro 3, carbide tipped, ground multiple times.
Big C doesn't really hold up as the factory ground TINY-C did, so I am gonna try convert back to little C one grind at a time.

I don't carry extra chains, I bring along a half dozen chainsaws or so and swap them out as their dedicated chains get dull.

Square isn’t just faster. It severs fibers in fibrous western wood better which helps chip flow. Western woods will actually choke the bar and chain with chips. They pretty much require square skip once the wood gets sizable. I’ve had 24” bars choke in mesquite.

Round vs. square.

This is impressive. I can see how square would be nice for milling to leave a finer surface.
I think leaving the gullet in would help the surface too.

Square is more efficient. The top of the cutter grabs a chip, the side severs it. Round filed is a compromise, square they are both dedicated to their purpose…with a vee in the middle for chip flow.

Going to see what this chain does when I get my 201
I busted my PowerSharp chain and have no intension of getting another.
Could have purchased a couple quality full chisel chains for the cost of the PowerSharp setup.
