Stock vs. Stock, 461 hands down.

Ported, the difference is also noticeable.

Short of Hondaman's Hybrids, which would be awesome Stihl, I think the 61 is the perfect 70cc class saw.
I have ported lots of 460's and 4 or 5 461s and the 461s are stout.

For falling in these hard woods nobody runs a 70cc saw, I never did either.

A 92cc 064 hybrid weighs with in a few ounces of a 460 and that's why the 046 an 460 I have never get used.
I just had a very nice 461 but again I would never use it so I sold it.

The 460's I have don't oil a short bar well much less a long one but a bar over 24" is useless here.

Show up to work with a 24 inch bar here they would send you home
The only reason anybody runs a 28 here is to balance a 90cc power head.
I prefer a 24 or 28,anything longer has the tip on the ground.
Everyone here is a logger so there is no big trees, the timber grows slow here which makes it some of the best white oak in the world but it's logged hard,a 20" tree is a good one.

I have a good deal of experience running 046/460s, both my own and others, both stock & ported, for general use and at GTGs. I currently have 3 of them, my brother has a 460, and I brought one back from the disabled list for my neighbor. That said, I have never run a first year dp muff 046, which I hear is a whole different beast, so I can't comment on them.

I have also run several stock & ported 461s at GTGs, including Jeremy's 461 which has the limiters pulled and a dp muff cover (just like my brother's 460).

IMO, in stock form (or with the dp cover, etc) the 461 has more torque and is stronger than the 046/460.

In ported form, IMO, the difference goes away. I think my ported 460s are comparable with any ported 461s I have run. In fact, the 460 Dr Al ported for me did three dyno runs all around 8 Hp which I believe is on the high end for any work saw of that size (the port timing #s came from Randy).

I also get good run times out of my saws, but that my be because I ask the builders to put the emphasis on torque, which I think also makes them more efficient.

Bottom line is I would be happy with either model, but would make sure the 460s get ported.

My dad bought the first 046 are dealor got in and I still have it,stock it was ok but not a huge difference over a 460,i ported it 10 years ago probably and it still is a good running saw but it like the other 460 I have hasn't been ran in years.

My 064 hybrid with a wrap weighs a couple ounces more than the 046 or 460 and will destroy one with any length bar.

Out of 30 loggers I know I can only think of one that ever uses a 70cc saw and it's a 461. In soft woods I can see its appeal with a long bar but they just don't get used here, the ones I have sold or ported all go or come from the forum.

Some shorter guys run 28 here i am 6 foot a 32 fits me ok ,36 the tip hits the ground like you are saying ,it is nice for limbing ,the extra reach ,and can make all the cuts from one side of the tree felling ,whole different world here so what works here may not work there though .
