I've had several of each and I find them to be quite different despite what others think. I prefer the 460 for shorter bars and the 461 with longer bars. 460 balances better with a 20 than a 461 does. The weight distribution is slightly different between them. With a short bar the 460 feels lighter. Opposite is true for a long bar like a 28. The 461 has more lugging power than the 460 IMHO. A 461 with an unlimited coil, dual port muffler and timing advance is a very impressive saw. Those simple mods give the 461 a whole new attitude.

20" bar on a 460?

Why?

I have never ran a 460 but I am really happy with my 461 so far. It seems to have tons of torque especially at low rpms compared to my 2171. Every person has they're personal preferences I guess.

All the guys i talk to in montana and i-da-hoe like a 461 better.
Logging is the main industry here ,i have askef a lot of guys what they use for a saw. The 461 is not the most used ,but they are starting to be used because tje 460 and 440 are not on the shelfs anymore one company i know bought 12 460 saws just to have because they were tried and true reliable ,they dont like being ginnea pigs for new models ,auto tune carbs are a big no to them also.

I've run both a stihl ms461 and a 460,and i cant tell much difference between the two, however i have now met two seperate arborists who swear the 461 is gutless compared to the 460.
Is this just the usual "old is better than new"argument,or is there some truth in it?
send the 461's to me and i'll chuck some guts in em.!!

A 461 is a superior saw in almost every way,I've always thought a 460 was under powered.

Stock vs. Stock, 461 hands down.

Ported, the difference is also noticeable.

Short of Hondaman's Hybrids, which would be awesome Stihl, I think the 61 is the perfect 70cc class saw.
