.040" might actually be "normal" for .404" chain.

I ran up to .058" on full chisel 3/8" 20" on my PS-7900, saw handled it fine and chain did not break.

The shape is strange but the real surprise is the raker depth, it's 040 out the box.

I have never used this chain before but I'll find out tomorrow what it's like
I'm a fan, especially in chains for bigger saws, of a less aggressive hook, wider cutting surface, narrower angle-relations, and lower, smooth depth gauges.

The tooth doesn't hit the wood taking as big if a bite with the working corner/point, but still takes a large shaving because of how the depth gauge is set. Dont forget a good, fairly clean gullet for aided chip flow. The working corner shares the load with the rest of the cutter more evenly and all parts seem to dull less quickly.

Most of it is 030 the only different 1 I have found is B3S (chipper) at 035 from new.

I have this now in chipper, semi and full chisel so I might try to compare the cutting speed of them all together

This could be a option. Hexa file matches up in there

Even if the file doesn't match, you can make it work. You can tailor a tooth a lot of ways with file size/type, position of the file in the tooth, amount of pressure applied, positioning of the jig/grinder, and on and on.

To follow up on the Carlton LM. I can't use the words I want to describe the factory grind here.

After all the swearing and filing it's a nice chain to use. That factory grind is useless. It's the first time a chain out the box reminded me of watching NASCAR because all it did was turn left.

How the f*** Can a chain that has been made since the 70's be this f***ing bad when new. They completely f***ed up Oregon 27x with a crap grind these days and the effort here is even worse.

I would prefer they gave me the stuff with no edge ground on it than this poor effort

The quality of NOS , can’t be compared with today’s chain and standards of manufacturing, Oregon, Carlton etc, have gone the way of benefiting the company’s shareholders, quality of the product and the consumer has become irrelevant kinda ,

If you have seen the video vallorbe has on square filing you would have seen they say to file low and leave a beak. I have been trying this for a while on 1 chain just to see what happens.

This 21LPX has run 2 tanks on a dcs460 and this is what it looks like after cleaning the chain. It looks stupid, it's hard to leave a consistent beak but it actually works. Cut speed is high, it holds it edge fine and feels smooth when cutting.

I don't think it's the best way to square file but it does work. File is a Vallorbe 3 square.

Converting that crap carlton 404 to square using a similar approach. 3 square, 25 degree top plate.

This is as far as I take it on the first sharpening, the shape will be formed properly over the next few touch ups.

That looks similar to some factory grind I have seen on my chains, can't recall which one though.

Those rakers look very low.
Is it not too grabby?

I'll go post in the video thread. Done with a Stihl progressive gauge and cuts fine just looks bad

B3S Chipper. Gave this a run on the weekend and cut speed is so close to 404 semi that I would say it's the same.

Much more vibration but it cuts well and holds an edge like nothing else. Filed 35/60/85
