Yes it's called setting all saws from hand saws, circular saws, bandsaws, chainsaw chain all have set by design.
Chain manufacturers like Stihl have literature on setting and it's importance. Hopefully Philbert will be along and put this information up.
Will a chain still cut with setting all over the place YES. Will most even notice doing that they are giving up cutting performance NO.
Think of it like raker heights all different from cutter to cutter will it still cut Yes but not what you'd call efficiently.
Hacking up a load of firewood set probably isn't of concern but if getting the most performance out of a chain set is very important.

This is set.

I would argue that the differences in set would be neglegable between long & short bits. If the rakers are all clearanced to the same depth individual to their corresponding bits, things work fine. Can't just throw a chain with plenty of bit left away because you ripped the corners off of one side.

Lotta funky angles here. This big hook thing is not what I would call efficient. Having the top & side plate work together makes for a much more usable chain. The side plate is what allows a bit to plain & not gouge. The difference is night & day when you need to open up a closing kerf or do any sort of tip work. Longer bars exaggerate the differences, does your 32" bar scream through 12" wood but bogs easily fully buried? That isn't efficiency... on that note, everybody needs a nice square grinder! Square grinders for everyone!

i have spent a fair amount of time measuring with different devices to determine the angles of cutters to have a baseline for when they cut really good. without knowing its hard to go back to what cut really well. i have a piece of a broken stone of some angles that were really good cutting chains i just dont remember what the other settings were on that grinder.

the forward lean on the side plate is far more of an illusion to the eye most will say between 3° and 5° for a good self feeding chain. it depends on how you look at it.

It doesn't take much change to hit a very sweet spot. I hand filed my forever spruce grind years back. Could not believe it. Very little top plate angle, & very little side plate angle with pretty acute cutting edges.
