You into ‘bore cutting’ now?

Philbert
Always have been, it is part of my profession.
I learned grinding a drill bit long before I knew what a sharp chain is.
I am still learning in the chain department, done learning with the drill bits. :D

@Maintenance Chief looks like it wouldn’t cut poo.

@Philbert I’m not trackin
The TriLink featuring such "Shark Fins" I have can be "made" to cut acceptable.
I am using it up for bucking dirty logs and do not plan on purchasing any more of it.
I have cut off those shark fins on my loops.

I believe Philbert was referring to me my posting of drill bit cutting edge pictures. ;)

I wrecked 6 chains today, one of them 3 times.
I HATE bucking muddy skidded logs!
It was a job I agreed to do earlier this year.

I utilized round ground/filed full chisel and semi chisel, semi chisel gave up long before full chisel and cut much slower while still sharp.

Oregon filed with 7/32” held low vs. filed with 7/32” and then kissed up under the top plate with 5/32” a couple licks. I think this somewhat duplicates the new angles we are seeing on factory chains like Xcut. I did it real quick in the field because the 5/32” was handy and it cut very nicely on my 288, 36” skip, soft but a bit dirty wood.

Found pic of raisman I took when new. I think I would have to profile my wheel to duplicate it.

I used a narrow wheel per @huskihl and had some success, also going off Stihl chain and USG angle chart. I think it’s important that the foremost point of the cutter is at the top where the top plate transitions to the rounded side. You can see my previous grind was off. Probably similar to getting the top/side plates wrong on square. That rounded cutter is tricky to grind. The angles don’t play out the same as a flat sided full chis. 514916E7-F122-48E4-977F-4BB75D2ABB8B.jpegA83ABB7D-B4D2-4F86-AD53-D482A2FE08C9.jpeg

Trimmed off the widowmaker stump with the raisman and then made a couple bucking cuts. It’s a bit aggressive for felling or horizontal cuts, but nice bucking. When horizontal, sometimes the top/back of the bar/chain catches and shoves the saw back pretty hard, I think because of those rounded/bulging cutters. Also, feeding is very difficult with the bar nose buried, but ok if it protrudes. D2397DA0-B9CE-4462-ACE5-3C5DD08538A8.jpeg

I made the "Big-C" version of that X-Cut cutter the other day.
I have to try it though.
I also have a new X-Cut in .325", but it will remain new for a while. I need to spend all the slow semi chisel .325" I have so I don't have to look at them no more.

Ground deep into the gullet, then round filed with the file positioned lower than recommended.
You can see where the file sat in the second picture.
This was merely play, I like my chains with a big C and the file positioned higher.

Fixed up another one of my Dad's chains that he messed up for his 036. Still hooky haha... At least all the angles are pretty close and teeth are close to the same length. Had to remove a lot of material to get them back in to shape20221111_212016.jpg
