Now...... I guess now would be a good time to discuss porting.

Do the 044's like wider ports or better kept closer to stock?
Smooth the lowers edges out or leave them alone?
Any rough numbers I can start with after I measure this one up?
Actually it would be good to copy this post on the "Porting theory thread"
One or more of the Wizards will be along shortly and you will have all sorts of answers!!!

I assume you read my 10mm Meteor findings ;)
I know right,,, Shucks J Man the cost of OEM are only 10.00 higher now than meteor, I just bought an 066 slug for 46.00, why not if it a saw you like and plan or keeping or selling. Lighter wrist pin better rings and cir-clips,,,, what's not to like about that!!!!!!

I have been sticking to OEM, but a Meteor 460 piston has wider skirts than OEM, which may allow for some different porting.

OEM pistons are about $400 in Australia once you get the OEM rings, pin, clips and bearing

I have been buying meteor piston kits from the USA.

What we folks in Australia need is an American dealer who will send OEM parts to Australia
Or a buddy.

Whats the exchange rate?

Stay away from the 044's and get a 372 .:D

I just spoke to old mate selling the saw. Real nice fella
He said someone rang him and wanted to swap the 044 for a 395 and he said no.
He gave me the serial number and it started with 13 so it is a 12mm saw

Mate, I really appreciate the offer and when I need some OEM bits, I know where you all hang out ;)

JMS is helping me out with some parts for my 066 which I am over the moon about!
Your offer and another member as well..... I am loving this forum.

Now, if any one in America wants to buy an 066 piston...... just the piston by its self..... for $204 USD, I will be happy to help you out with one from Australia :vomiton:

One thing I am on the look out for is the orange decal that goes in the center of the flywheel cover that says........... Ahhh

It is on my bench ready for surgery/rebirth

First thing first.....fuel and oil and fired it up.
It turns over easier than I like.
Started and ran fine but i get varying RPM's at WOT. I recon its sucking a little air from somewhere.
Shut it down and let it cool.
Checked compression and got 120 psi which explains it being easy to turn over.
The next thing that had me concerned was the unknown status of the jug. I have had nightmares of finding it has a plugged cheap Chinese jug under the cover.
I was REALLY pleased to find this

I then started a bit of a teardown looking for issues...... there has to be something. It would not be a 2nd hand saw without a problem.

I found it had a no name brand new chain sprocket on it and that it was sitting in really deep, leaving a 2mm gap between the clip and the washer.
took it off and the sprocket has a recess inside that sat over the clutch nut, allowing it to seat 2mm deaper than it was supposed to.
This has destroyed the oil pump worm gear and allowed the chain sprocket to cut into the case and start to cut into the oil pump pipe. No major damage thank goodness but will need a new sprocket and worm gear.
Inside of the cylinder and the piston look to be in tip top condition looking through the ports and spark plug hole.

Plan for the saw:

Strip to bits, split case and all.
New bearings, seals, gaskets, AV rubbers, hoses and any other worn bits.
New Caber rings
Toss the gasket and use Motoseal 2
Sand the squish to get squish back to .020
Slightly widen the exhaust port and open up the exhaust port mouth, + polish it up. No change to timings
Square out the bottom of the intake a touch, no change to timing
Replace muffler front with dual port front cover and open that sucker up + new hi flow spark screens. The stock spark screen looks very restrictive

To add to this........ I am VERY impressed with this saw.

It is my brothers, and I am rebuilding it for him, but it looks really good sitting between an 026 and 066.

If I wasn't a bit broke and didn't have 3 066's, I would be looking for one for myself.
Probably will get one eventually. It is a nice saw and I cannot wait to see how it goes when rebuilt.

Now...... what might be causing the low compression?
Worn rings?
