Ok -- this 044 is oiling just fine. The sump line and inside the tank looks like new -- oil is clean and perfect. Took clutch cover off and cleaned and everything under there is like new -- clutch drum not burnt (looks new), nothing under cover burnt, rim sprocket looks perfect. Heck this saw is like new. I can't get over how nice it is for what I think is a bit of an oldie not being a 440. Anyone know when they stop making 044's ?

Ran it w/o clutch cover and it dribbles oil out the oiler rather nicely. 1/4 throttle and it will dribble on the ground drip drip drip...

The oiler holes in the bar don't appear obstructed. Bar looks burnt -- and I think I know why...

The chain -- it is the absolute dullest chain I've ever dealt with. Teeth rounded over real bad. There is a 3 on the drive link would that be 050 gauge looks like right from Stihl's site
It's a 20" bar 3/8 pitch -- stihl brand chain I'm assuming RS.

I put it to a piece of oak while bar still on and that chain won't cut at all -- push down and forget it.

I think the culprit is the owner pushing like a madman on the chain trying to get it to cut with this horrid chain.

I'm going to clean the bar groove really well and put a proper edge on the teeth and set the depth gauges at 0.025.
Will test piss rev for oil into a log and if oil is getting into the bar will make a few cuts.

This saw runs, sounds, and feels strong. My compression tester is no good but poor mans it feels nice and thunky pulling it over. It has a nice bark like a 70cc should.
Tachs at about 12500 seems rather rich -- these have unlimited coils I assume? If so, what is a good no load RPM to set it at for work?

If it's not raining when done with the chain I'll try and grab a video of it cutting... assuming all of my suspicions here are right!

Good deal. Maybe check the bar over real good and look for burrs if the chain is that bad. Dress up the bar and put a new flat edge on the bar and clean the sides.
I looked at a 440 shop manual. I think I saw 13500 rpm's at top end.

Sighting down the bar looks great and feels smooth (no burs), just a lot of grit laden gunk -- cleaned it and nose sprocket seeems fine.
Bet they were cutting dirt or just happily hitting the ground every time they cut as the grit in the chain is a lot.

Will clean her up and see what I get. 13500 sounds good for 70cc if I remember right. Too rich is better than too lean so I can set it for 13200 to be safe... 4 cycling well at 12500 is where it's at now.

I think the chain is semi chisel BTW. It doesn't seem to have the "point" formed by the "corner" that a full chisel does but round.
We'll see what we get.

I forgot to mention air filter looks new too.
I won't lie, I want to keep the saw... If it were mine I'd throw on an Oregon bar w/ LGX chain. Can't do that now as all of my bars are husky mount.

It is going to convert me -- or at least get me more interested in them!
After a ton of file strokes I've found the chain is full chisel -- I just had to file off the 1/16 to 1/8" of blunted over section that looks like someone took a hammer and blunted it over... just rocked beyond rocked... probably need a grinder but I'm persistent when it comes to chains. On my "strong" side I've got these going back to nice point that wants to stab me. I'll go over the other side til I get into full chisel cutter and get the point. Depth gauges will need work but I think I'll be able to to get it. Now its just a pissing match between me and this chain... I refuse to be defeated ;)

Put a HD-2 filter on it and dp muff cover and tune it at about 14,500, it will really wake up!

What is the SN??? Sounds like you got something real nice there!

You guys are killing me ... it's not mine but I'm gonna have a hard time letting it go.

The chain does seem harder than all of the oregon stuff I file -- had to take back a good 1/4 of the cutters to get back to a chisel looking 90 so I get a point that want to stab my thumb when checking for sharp. Hoping to go test after dinner if the rain holds off.

I'll get the serial when I'm back in front of it. Very curious when she was made if you guys have some way to tell -- only if registered with Stihl IIRC?

You won't beat the price or quality of a total/tsumara
I just bought a 3/8 050 24" and a 3/8 050 16" shipped for 137$

Where did you order from? Everywhere I checked was sold out.

Tested it and now it will self feed most of the time and when it does it's cutting great -- sometimes it wants to ride up though and not feed so it needs more work. The cutters on my strong side (I use a homelite410 chain vise) are definitely in better shape -- even with the vise I still can file better on one side. I know I've got better points on the strong side will hit it again until my weak side has better points. I think I can drop the depth gauges a bit more too, when feeding no signs of grabbiness and it moves along!

Did an oil test pointing it at the bench and piss rev and it left oil. Bar not hot either.

Here's some pictures -- one includes the serial:
