Yes, exactly Eric, they should come out like fangs when you pull the rope, then retract when you let off the rope.

Believe it or not, it works so darn well that my set up on 044#1 is all original, including the rope! The Elastostart sticker came off the pull cord, but it is the original. If you don't abuse them they are almost indestructible! I remember when I ran Homelite saws, had trouble with the starters every single year!

Yup. I learned by force today how it all works including the double clip. Owner abused this one the saw made a funky noise when stopping it and pawls finally failed when I was using it (and I engage them before pulling to be nice).

I was finally able to run it with new bar and chain today... doesn't get old. Gonna be hard to give it back once the other parts get here. Good learning experience today.

So here it is finally cutting oak that has been sitting going on a year now (hard stuff) baking in the summer heat.
This is after the starter work. Just need that Huztl muffler and this thing will be done.
Saw 4 cycles on the cooler less humid day today no problem up at 13700.
Oiler working great -- turned it up and adjustment screw is fine.

I want to measure compression but compression tester I have is junk.
One time when pulling it the rope got out of my hands -- only saws that have done that to me is my 225 lb compression 262.
Not sure what typical stock compression is, but this one is pretty beasty. Maybe it's had some work but doubtful given the saw's history.

Nice! Is it still that funky chain? Or did you put a new one on there?

It's a new chain 72LGX072G (3/8 w/ and 0.050 bar) it's 20" bar I went with the same length as original bar.
Comstock is having a sale on powermatch bars free LGX chain when you buy a bar til October. I took advantage.

I had 372 and 044 out Saturday and the saws feel about the same now in performance.
When I get the new Dual port muffler I'll put an edge on the 044's chain and see if I can get it to beat the 372 -- it ought to!

If it were my saw it would have been in the mail a while ago.
I'll check with the owner to see if he might want to invest a few bucks in a port job.

If we have a fall GTG I'll ask the owner if I can bring this so you and others can check it out. Might have to pry it from @MustangMike 's hands though when GTG is over :)

Finally got the Huztl muffler this week and installing it today.

Took some pics of the mufflers side by side and piston / cylinder through exhaust hole. Machine marks on piston and cylinder and top of piston look like mirrors, no deposits on piston. This thing is like a NOS saw.

My bad -- there is a gasket there. The metal seemed like it was just part of the cylinder.
Gasket in great shape... good to go.

Very interested in seeing how this saw runs. Seems like it is almost identical to my 044#1. If I'm not mistaken, the KS piston (A/B) will have wings on it.

I think that makes 2 of us Mike :)
If I can get ahold of the dyno from Bill (the motorcycle brake one, not the hydraulic he's working on now -- brake one needed one of the sprockets hardened or something there was metal wear from using it) it would be interesting to put this saw on there and see how it does.

Fitup is perfect... lines up like OEM.

Here it is with the 2 ports ready to bark.
After a couple honey-do things I'll try it out.

Saw definitely woke up with DP muffler -- wow. I can push on it more and it feels stronger.

I'll list two videos -- first one is with stock muffer and second is with the Huztl dual port muffler. I should mention too the chain was essentially new in the first video and 2nd video the saw had been to and from a tree job doing several cuts in a willow that got taken out by a microburst and hit the side of a house. Saw cutting in 2nd video has not been sharpened since the tree work.
