Definitely going to try and remember to get with you on some flies once the money opens up some. Working too much to fly fish right now but really hoping to be able to soon.

Mostly use them for bass and bream around here, but do have a river below guntersville that I have heard has trout in it. Friend is going to show em one of these days.

So how do these names come about?
Pretty simple.
Caddis:
CDC is short for Cul de Canard. Feathers from a ducks azz that are naturally waterproof. Which is what I used for the underwing here. The snowshoe refers to the overwing material which is the naturally waterproof hair from a snowshoe rabbits foot.

Stonefly:
Well, that’s self explanatory (to me anyway).
Bead head.... because I used a black brass bead for weight.
Variant just means it’s a variation of a standard pattern

Nice but that's a lot to remember and stuff.

The caddis is tied here as if in the adult stage.
The Stonefly is tied as if in the nymph stage.

There are literally hundreds of different sub-species of each critter, but here are some basic images of actual insects I’m trying to replicate.
Keep in mind that trout, in a river, are opportunistic feeders. Their food is coming at them sometimes at a very fast past depending upon if they’re located in a run, or riffle vs slower water in an eddy or a pool. So a lot of times they’re not gonna be overly fussy. As long as you have the basic colors and profile to match the aquatic insects that inhabit your local waters, you’re gonna catch fish.
Trout tend to be a bit pickier for dry (floating) flies (the caddis above is a dry).

Caddis, Stonflies and Mayflies are the 3 main species in anyone’s fly box.
They all start out as aquatic insects that emerge and turn into flying insects. In their last stages of life as a winged critter, they return to the water to lay their eggs.
The emerging stage and the spinner (egg laying) stage are when they are most vulnerable. Both stages are fished as “dry fly” stages.

Mayflies live 99.9% of their life cycle as larva under water. They swim or crawl to the surface, emerge (shed their exoskeleton) and become a flying insect. Once they emerge, there time is limited. Most mayflies only live about 24hrs in the adult stage.
