Tolerance debates end up like "best builder" debates.

Build the best saw you can build, if it dosent work out the only one to blame is yourself.

Lots of good saws have been built with sub par equipment, and less than ideal conditions.

Now to keep this some what on track,
Deets066 looks as if you can mount the rotary table on end (vertical) if so get/make a tail stock and you now have a lathe to turn mandrel's :D

Like this one? :)

This thread is on track, it's all about machining and where ever it trails off to

I plan on making 2 mandrels. 54 and 52 mm. Those are the most common ones I use. I wanted to be able to do it in the mill as well so I didn't have to make a mandrel for every jug I do

Don't ever think those old Bridgeports won't cut accurately .Those things to hot rodders and engine builders are what a model '94 Winchester is to a deer hunting rifle .

Mine by the way has a brass tag that says Mall Tool Company .Might have milled parts for huge old chainsaws of a bygone era for all I know .

Something like an imported CNC mill or lathe might be good for a small job shop to the tune of 60 g's .However for one of stuff the average good machinest will have it done on a good manual machine before a CNC guy figured out how to get the damned thing even programmed
You got that right! The older guy that builds our pulling parts has all older non CNC equipment and his work is second to none and he says the same thing. CNC machines were designed for production work not one off odd ball stuff

I once read a book about machining a few years back, it was printed in 1990, I'll try to find it. It touched on the factory in VA beach. Then, STIHL's tolerances were 1/100MM (0.0004") I'm sure they have only gotten tighter, however I don't see it as that important for a cylinder base.

As far as tooling, I hate to give up my source you guys gotta promise not to run the prices up, but here it is: http://www.hoffonlineauctions.com
Going cheap on new tooling is a bad idea, but hoff has a lot of great deals on used stuff.
I've filled up two 40' shipping containers with machine tooling from them, and have made out like a bandit on most of it.
It takes a while toget it, and account set up is a PITA, but well worth it.

I'd use something like this to mill squish band, not a boring head.

@paragonbuilder if you end up with that mill shoot me a PM, I'm 50% sure that I'd have a NOS set of #9 BS collets, and 99% sure I'd have a set of good used ones.

There's a vert-horz table, probably go cheap.

Yes modern practices have the parts within microns which are 1/10000 of a mm. Probably 15 either way .

No matter though because you don't need "Swiss watch" parts fits on chainsaws .
