IDK,

This method produces an aesthetically superior end product for certain. But I am fairly certain I could get 2 done by hand for every one done this way, and possibly 3.

Agree, it’s the biggest PITA on this model. I guess the rest of it’s ease makes up for it.

I thought about removing the entire extension as well, but I think it would cause too much instability of the piston and make the case capacity even larger than it already is.

Not sure why the “strato’s opening into the case” would cause any issue at all. There should be zero pressure there when piston is at BDC, that area only acts as a connection between the strato’s and the uppers. If it kept positive pressure as it approached BDC, that pressure would inhibit negative pressure to fill the stratos/uppers with fresh air on the upswing. Opening them to the case might actually help, but I don’t see it having any effect whatsoever.

Opinions?

It would be even more area yet that is decreasing case compression and reducing velocity.

For me anyway, this was much faster than doing it by hand and constantly checking with a straight edge. The lathe already had the cylinder all set up and ready to go after the band cut, so just a tool change was all.
Also for me, even if it took more time, the end result was worth it. Just getting rid of the hassle and worry over doing it by hand.
Every one has to do what is best for their set up though. I was lucky and only had to buy two bolts to make this happen, otherwise you would have to do a lot of volume on this model to buy tool holders and such to make it pay.

Cool thread Stump

The bit Doc mentioned about it not mattering if you cut off the extension. It will pick up fuel and oil if exposed to the case area. Kinda defeats the fresh air thing going on there.

An air powered 1/4" die grinder with an end mill should work well to cut from the base vs the side imo. It could work well in both positions if mounted nice and rigid with a double clamp.

I've cut a lot of things with that flat fluted end mill about three inches long.

It does. I'll go through my bin later and take one.

I ordered one up, but the saw is going out tomorrow and this will have to catch a ride with another saw, so if you can get a picture of one installed for this thread that would be great, as I will not be able to. Thanks :)
