With a large file you are kinda locked in on a shape. With a small file you can carve the cutter to your desire. Harder to be consistent.

If I have a durable grind and I switch to clean wood and want to speed it up, I just run a 5/32” under the front edge of the top plate a couple licks and put some hook in it. Makes it kinda like Xcut.

For the first time in probably 10 years I just used a grinder. I had a handful of emotional support files in my other hand to get me through this challenging situation.

Attempting to copy Stihl RS factory grind.

You need to offset to copy the stihl
The closest I could get with the crappy Chinese grinder I have was coming in at 50 degrees, 30 degrees, and it back 10.

Then just profiled the wheel using a new RS cutter as the template. Last pic is it touching a new RS. Got the upper part right so that's good enough for me.

Tried an experiment shaping a grinding wheel a bit.
Early grinds after dressing the wheel looked fairly good,

Added a 20 degree side bevel and flattened the face.

The sharp corner at the right side of the wheel wore to a more rounded corner before 36 cutters were finished.

I'll need to find a much more durable wheel for this Foley 308 in the near future. This grinder takes a 1/2" arbor, with 5"-5 1/4" diameter. Looks like a 5.75" would fit.

Edit: Changed wheel size from 4" to 5" or larger.

I tried a grind like that, it cut poorly and wasted a lot of power on doing so.
Your results may vary though.

I dressed a belt saw grinder Weiler wheel, ground 36 cutters (72DL/20") and the corner didn't even show any noticeable wear.

Got a reel of 36RSK coming, supposed to be fast , never tried it before,
I have a loop of 46RSK. Apart from the different shape at the front of the depth gauge I'm actually not sure what else it does. Its ment to have more vibration but it's a 60DL loop on a 08S that vibrates like a jack hammer any way so I can't tell.
