5031024-0 is the longer deeper taller one for the 266 chassis saws that I need.

5034848- is the wrong/shallow one that appears to go to the 281 chassis. Maybe someone put the wrong one in a 266 starter? The difference is about .050", it will engage half the dogs and work for a while until there is wear. Starter housings I have are same part number. I'll get some measurements tonight.

I also have a later 272 starter, probably from a single coil saw which is considerably deeper, need to measure n' part number it....and my 288 starter.

Yep, I've got what you need! The "281" one is for a 181/early 281, the longer deeper one is for later 281's and 288's. If you have a spare shorty I'd be happy to swap. My brother's early 281 split the pulley and what I thought was the correct replacement turned out to be the too deep one.

Awesome. My shorty is trashed...but I might have a short Jred. I have a couple of those starters to look at as well, ran into the same issue. If I have the time and presence of mind to remember tonight I'll get to the bottom of it.

If you don't, don't sweat it. I've got two good "shallow" pulleys, I'd just like to have a spare working recoil hanging around.

66 is 50mm open port. Same cylinder as a 268 non XP, but you should be able to use a standard 268XP piston no problem.
Ok. They have 2 different ones offered.
The one I listed, and another that says its a windowed piston. I know this one isnt windowed.
Pics didnt show any detail for that.
Wondering if they meant open port?
Was looking on Wolf Creek.

Windowed piston is the good one. Google the piston numbers, more info.

that 266 went for 410 shipped, I have 3 of them and the top cover said xp and the starter cover had SE hard to say without looking at the badge . Still dwelling on that one. Being a holiday weekend I told my wife I wouldn’t be searching for chainsaw parts and that’s all ive done :D

I used to buy them usually 40-60.00 for runner's
Now a new generation has discovered them and older guy's are going back to them and drove the prices up.

Quick question.
This thread is a little more active, so I'm asking here.
Got a 262XP I'm taking apart to put crank seals(probably bearings too) in.
How does the oiler pump drive come off?0908212053.jpg

262 is a while different kettle of fish(different chassis.) You will need a puller to pull the gear once you get that washer off

But the washer is supposed to pop off?
Dont want to go prying on stuff too much without knowing how its supposed to come off.
