I look at this square file thing like a straight razor to a chisel and an exe .Certainly the square is sharper and to a point should cut faster but it will not hold that edge as long as other alternatives .On the other hand you can't shave with a cold chisel but you can cut steel . Try that with a Case XX straight razor .Apples and oranges .

Mike made it for the purpose of square filing I believe.

Does a good job of grabbing the drivers on either side of the cutter. "No chatter"
I'm have a problem holding the drivers on my Tecomec auto-grab grinder. Seems like the vice pinch point is too far behind or the clamp is not spreading the load enough. I fixed the hydros so they work well. Oregon's new vice has a different design. Same hydro cylinder in the same location.

That square vice looks nice. Gives me ideas.

I decide to give the ATOP jig a try. As a complete noob to square filing, I am pretty impressed. Learning curve for it was relatively easy.

First tooth .325 LPX

Took quite awhile to convert it from round to square but I needed the practice anyway.

Cross cut with depth gauges set to around .030 on the MOFO 026 in spruce. I'm pretty happy, but time will tell in hard wood.

That’s a nice lookin toof Mr. Pecker.
Looks like softwood angles from that pic. For hardwood you’d need to have a fuzz more downward angle on the file and roll it into the tooth a bit. Doesn’t take very much

Thanks Deeter that makes sense. I thought the down angle looked a bit acute.

Maybe the learning curve was easier for me having used and seen a lot of good square, but I think the thing would be pretty user friendly for the average round filer.

Looks good considering the atop is designed for 3/8 chain.
