Please try to took at this from a Toolmakers' point-of-view.

I bought a file that is intended for square filing. Looking at the edges, there are two bevels that look like they add up to 90 deg..

Why can't is simply use a "square" file? A 1/4" or 5/16" square file would work perfectly. (maybe even 3/16" would work)

I understand that angles and depths and undercut would need to be maintained.

Just asking...............

I gotta say that I feel a round filed chain with a good hook would technically seem to be better than square filed for chip removal.

Double bevel square files are less than 90 degrees? Haven't tried a true square file but I imagine you wouldn't be able to keep the flat off the rakers. Put one on a chain and see.

Sounds like you haven't actually used the file yet and/or don't understand it's use... I'm assuming you have a 'double bevel' type file that's intended to be used on one side OR the other, like if two 'single bevel' files were attached back to back. In other words, you aren't going to use the 90 degree aspect of the file on your chain (other than potentially hitting the tie straps with it)... That and I don't believe it's actually 90 degrees either, more like 120.
So you could possibly use a square file, you'd have to file the two faces separately though to do it with proper angles.
Wait until you discover the hexagonal ones, lol.

I know the price of Pferd double bevel files are ridiculous.
