I got a partial roll of .050 .404 AL and didn't want to round file it, keep it original. I bought 2 different files for square and watched some German fellow on YouTube. This is my first attempt at it. Just a touch up and some chip production on a 24" pecan log.20200926_142355.jpg 20200926_142404.jpg 20200926_143128.jpg

Pretty durable angles on your top and side plate. That chain will cut well for awhile.
Thats good to hear. Its Its funny but I felt less confident about my angles as I went. I'll keep practicing, I just bought a 25' roll of square skip 3/8s.

Very hard to tell from your pics but your side plate looks near 90* to top which is “ok” but a few forward * lean is more desirable.

How do I get more angle on that? That is the one part I was wondering about.

It seems like this filing technique is at or beyond the point of diminishing returns and the gains that are achieved are noticed by someone that uses a saw every day.
Meh ...... you’ll prolly have a better outlook after you run this

Good corner..

Plenty of metal to support the corner.

If a person keeps it in normal wood, it’ll last as long or longer than a round filed working corner..
They’re fragile.

Good looking angles Kevin. Make your wheel thicker so you don’t have to under cut your tooth with a round file. Taking it under your sideplate will rob power. Try keeping it flush

I don't have a grinder .
I have to teach employees how to round file in the field so I thought I might have a go at square filing. It might take me some practice to get it right but what the hell is anyone doing with life lately anyway?
It don’t have to be right to work...

Just sharp..

Right makes it better, but sharp cuts wood.

Not always true, there’s sharp with a working corner above the tooth corner and a sharp with a beak that doesn’t last.

Agreed Clint !
The chassis is angled down a little towards the front.

Maybe @toolmaker can grab a few pictures of some cutters after he slaps that chain onto his saw ??

I will say this: Stihl chain has more consistency in their cutter profiles, this Oregon chain had lots of cutters that weren’t lining up to the same spot on the wheel. Hopefully my lemonade will put a nice smile on him !
