.404 interests me greatly but it’s only still made in .063? And all my gear is .050
Does it hold up that much better you find?
Yup , in stuff ur cutting, bars aren’t that much, to , but you want to have a saw that can pull it to ,Here’s two different.404’s notice the kerf width, Oregon and Archer . Stihl is comparable to Oregon, IMG_1432.jpeg

I used to run 404 on my first saw a big 90cc skil so I have a little experience with it. I run 461’s, 288’s and a 390 so I don’t think power would be an issue?
Ported ? Wouldn’t use it on a saw that can’t pull it efficiently, without struggling,

All stock for now. Only ported saw I have is a 044 and it’s strong but I bet 404 would be hard on it. I’d assume a 390 or 288 wouldn’t struggle. My skil 1661 ran 404 but I thankfully haven’t had to run that saw in years

.404 does put a decent demand on a saw over 3/8 ,

I run 404 on a 288 clone and a 7900. They obviously don't pull it as well as the 880 but they do fine with shorter bars. I did test it with the 7900 a while ago and it's about 5% slower than 3/8 chain but 404 semi will take a lot more abuse.

This is what my neighbor brings me saying "it is still good, but touch it up a little"

Same story every time!
Guy doesn't know sharp from dull, but wonders why his 038 is giving up.

And that will be it, when they bend and/or break they are done.
New X-Cut is already waiting to be implemented.
Last job was bucking semi dry storm damaged knotty cherry, must have been too much for that cutter, the others are fine.
And I idiot was wondering why my saw kept biting hard and bogging down - guys, listen to Your equipment!

Fixed for that "last job" before retirement.

Fooling around with square filing for the first time. One of my initial attempts ended up much more Stihl Hexa-esque. I did this on another chain (without the gigantic bumpers) and it actually cuts pretty nice.

Then I started paying a little better attention and got here.

I did a similar grind on a Archer loop like You have on that first picture.
It did cut, but not very well compared to round ground. Also it seemed to demand more power from the PH doing bucking cuts.
I tried it, didn't like it, converted it back to round ground.
