mate it was 9 hrs of work, barked knuckles, a couple band aids to stop the bleeding, several beers and cans of JD each and the job was done.
I had to call it a day as it got dark and someone would have called the cops if I started another saw to tune haha
little blood want stop ya ,

066 measures 97/118-122/78
Mahle jug

@jmssaws

I'm thinking just 10 or 20 from the band and lower to 20 thou squish

Should sit me at about 99/121/79

What you recon?

I'd cut 030 or 040 off the base
Long as the intake stays reasonable like under 81-2 it will be fine
Leave the exhaust where it lands
101 or so.
Bout 21-23 degrees of blow down and just under 200lbs should do it.

Ok, took about 20 out of the band and with a gasket delete I had .027 squish
Sanded the base to get squish to bang on .020

Timing is now 99/120.5/80

He doesn't want it crazy modded as it's a work saw in a tree service company but I think that little mod with some light porting and a muffler mod will wake it right up

I think you are underestimating the change that will result from your work, and your customer will be more than happy! Best of luck with it.

I saw how you cut squish, any methods you use when you sand the base to ensure it stays even?

185-190lb won't bother it,I've got a bunch of saws in the woods with 200lbs.

Unless it's got a pipe hanging off it or boost ports or on alcohol it's a work saw in my eyes.

Excessive compression and tune and the man running it kills saws not porting.

Every saw That's used is going to break and regardless of what breaks if it's ported then that is what gets blamed most of the time.

The difference between my production/logging saws and a play saw is the tune one the carburetor.

Sanding base

I measure each corner and write it on the jug
80 grit emery stuck on some nice flat laminate timber.
Hold cylinder and do several runs in one direction, rotate 90* and go again
Once done 4 ways I measure the corners again to make sure they are staying even.

I usually get it to within 1 or 2 thou across all 4 corners

One tip is to remove the chrome from inside the cylinder base with a dremel as you go.
Makes the job faster and saves the emery paper from destruction

Thanks Brewz, but I was asking how you monitor keeping things even when you sand the BASE.

Jason, when I just open up the muffler and remove the carb limiters on a pro's saw, I think I'm extending the useful life of them. Excessive heat or a poor mix are most likely the most frequent saw enemies.

I know 190 psi won't bother it, that's where I want it.

I don't have the gear to work the uppers like you do so I try and keep all things fairly equal and concentrate on direction and flow.

No point gutting the lowers when the uppers become a bottle neck cause I can't afford the $400 for a 90* grinder.

I just do what I can with what I have and if done well, they go hard enough to make anyone smile

Thanks Brewz, and great tip on removing the plating, I would not have thought to do that!

The sanding part is pretty much what I was thinking. Also got to make one of them piston sanders for the squish.

The 044/440s spoil me, as you usually get perfect squish after removing the base gasket, but not the case with MS 460s, 660s, etc.

Most of the work I do in the transfers is done with a straight handpiece.
The tunnel is all I hog, generally the lower is big enough.

I widen the upper towards the intake as far as the ring end will let me and remove the bottleneck to make it a straight shot from the lowers to the turn under the bridge.
Remove the hump on the exhaust side and keep grinding till you see daylight in the corner.
On a 066 most of the time the transfers don't have to go up a lot so there's not a ton of right angle work.

Raising the transfers 15-18 degrees like on a 394 is a mountain of ra work.

Do one transfer at a time and look through the exhaust port so you can maintain the roof angle.

I blended the lowers bottom lip, widened the lowers a bit but just enough to help point flow in the right direction
Removed some material under the bridge and hogged out the bridge hump on the exhaust side.
Got a dremel stone and rounded the edges which made it perfect for lengthening the uppers towards the intake.

Not if you remove some from the squish first.
Then you got to sand the base.

Get .020 out of the squish on your 044 and take the same from the base.

I think the squared up squish band helps push more into the chamber for a better burn all in one spot. There is more to this mod than just making more compression.
I am liking my saws in the 175 to 185 psi range matched with the way I port.
Easy to start which helps when your tired and don't have a decomp, and they run great.

Every time I port a saw I evolve it a little bit, and they are getting better and better.
Help from the pro's on here is also a massive help!
