I know they’re impractical, slow to build and prone to failure but I love hybrid saws. So I wanted to create a place where we could compile info and get dorky on mutant saws. Please post up links to builds! Here’s some links to the more common builds:

Throw some more on here! The list lacks for Dolmar, Echo amd Mac. Discussion is very welcome. Mad scientists unite!

A lot of hybrid work is about fitting up parts. The threads show a lot of parts, but not much process. Anybody want to contribute info on their methods? Some things that come to mind:

Fitting con rod to piston.

Slotting cylinder base accurately.

Clearancing case for larger pistons.

Crank swaps.

Fabricating carb linkages.

Spacers.

Changing stroke or overcoming differences.

If you have a good method, or a really bad one, let’s see it. Failures are great learning tools. Everybody loves carnage.

When I built my hybrids back around 2008 - 2010 I don`t remember any problems doing so, they easily became a favorite go to saw when conditions warranted saws of that size, 044/046 and 064/066, lighter saw with more oomph, what`s not to like. Have multiple 046, 460, 066 and MS660 if more power is called for, in between sized saws are a great asset.

Hybrids have become fascinating to me lately!!! I like the thread idea.

@Ketchup Would you be willing to write a quick summary of what each link leads to?

I would like more details from @Homelite410 on his Husqvarna 350 /357 hybrid!

Husqvarna 357 / 272 hybrid is on the short list for me as well. Too bad CJ disqualified himself from being around to help tie up the loose ends in that build.

I have all of the parts for an 044 /046 now as well.

I shouldn’t forget that I also have two Dolmar 6400’s waiting for the OEM hybrid upgrade. I even have all of the seals, gaskets, and new OEM cylinders on hand!

@Red97 is making the Echos intriguing as well

And I keep hunting for a lathe... I’ve got plenty to do.

Anybody got a 550 to 562 conversion thread? Considering having a try.

Still my favorite saw, would really take somethin special to change my mind. Maybe a well ported 572.
I really want to make a hybrid out the 572. I have a few ideas just have to start seeing what I can make fit.

A question about stroke:

If you could find a piston tall enough, is there any reason a longer stoke jug wouldn’t work on a shorter stroke crank? Let’s say a 372 BB jug(36mm stroke) on a 359 frame (34mm stroke) with a 380cd piston (2.5mm taller than 272). I know there’s lots of trimming and fitting and changing port timing, but aren’t the tolerances within range?

I know you can put a shorter stroke jug on a longer stroke crank. With a tall enough piston can you go the other direction?

Personally that’s easier, in theory. In general the ports would be low. If you could machine enough of the base, and open deck cylinder, and moreover a reed valve open deck hybrid, seems easier to me.
A fixed deck would need a lot machined out to maintain port timing, especially the transfers. A short stroke would create an issue on the intake for sure on a piston port motor

That’s what I was thinking too. There will be more physical distance between ports. Exhaust and trans will read lower and intake will read higher. Without a long piston free porting could be a problem.

I was also thinking the stock ports would lose time area because of the shorter stoke.

Some power would be lost with the heavier piston.

It seems workable.
