Today I used a sledge until I had to sit down for a few minutes…but I won. Gnarr leaner dumped 90° to its lean. Need to get a good banger….and get or make some aluminum wedges with anti pop out spikes.
I can probably hook you up if you want a good wedge banger, or you can pick up a Woodland Pro axe from Bailey's. They're just rebranded Council's at a lower price.
I just checked, 10lb sledge. No wonder I was about to puke. Never mind pushing 100 degrees. I dunno them fire fallers do it.
They use 3-6lb axes, not 10lb sledges. 461's, 372's, etc and a 3-6lb axe seems to be standard equipment, only the Thor of the Desert would try packing a 3120 and Mjolnir out to a fire. ;) If you want some good reads, look up user Muleman77 on Bladeforums and BushcraftUSA and read his posts in the "Lets use those axes for what they were ment for" and the "chainsaw junkies" threads, it'll give you a peek at the work a USFS Mule Packer and Faller does.

I ain’t no @Cat 525 but I finally hung this one today. 3ish “ellbees” as my MIL says I reckon. I may have posted before, I got the idea it was a Collins Legitimus somewhere.

edit, more cleaning and better light, can just make out some of the letters of LEGITIMUS

I might trim the palm swell off, it feels weird. If one is going to bang wedges, it would be nice to turn the handle around backerds.

Tis a Legitimus, you can see the crown and hammer in the middle. The OAL will vary depending on your size, but a 28" or so haft below the head should be a good reference point.

Ha! I didn’t see it cuz I didn’t know it was there. Changed pic above. I thought that was just scratches.

That is a beauty

Almost sold it twice. One time the potential buyer offered enough I was willing to let go of it, then wanted me to drive a 2hr round trip to meet. Decided to pass.
The other, my wife talked me out of it.

I thought it was a practice axe and found out from Tuatahi it is a legit racing axe with a special grind. It was part of a large chainsaw related purchase and the owner threw it in because of all the other stuff I was buying. Acquired it at least 15 years ago. I don't know how long he had it before passing it on to me.

Hey David, that would probably be just fine but at 3 pounds it would be more of a “wedge spanker” haha
I like a good 5 pounder if you get into any sizable wood. But then again I’ve used limbs, rocks,or whatever was handy when I’ve broken handles. So personal preference,,,

So after felling for two days with @Woodslasher my 3lb is too light for anything but…light stuff and the poll is annoyingly small.

I like my 5lb faller’s axe but I I want more handle. I noticed it splits pretty good too so thinking maybe a council 5lb 36” splitting axe. Thoughts? Thanks!
