Now I know this here is the saw section...but this kinda sorta applies to saws and the process of falling so...

I am looking into a new Ax for driving wedges, knocking mud off logs, rescuing a saw from a pinch uh...in a pinch lol.

So show me your ax's, tell me what you do and dont like.

That's a beautiful looking ax. I've been looking at Stihls offerings as well, the Oshenkopf (sp?) heads look excellent.

I use a basic 3.5lb axe with a 17” handle for carrying on my falling belt but when I’m in bigger timber I’ll have this one near by. It’s also 3.5lb but has a 30” handle I believe. It’s the same company that make stihl’s axe heads, they’re Ox Heads. I don’t think stihl offer a head that heavy though. They have a nice wide back for hitting wedges

My favorite wedge banger is an old Jersey pattern with a straight 30” handle. Now that I have a legit falling pouch/belt/suspenders it won’t set right in the pouch so I went to a smaller Husky axe I had laying around. Fits great but I can’t beat on wedges like the ol Jersey. Don’t be afraid to look for an old head and hang a new handle in it. I haven’t bought an axe from the “store” in years.

Council axes have worked well for me. 3 1/2 pounder with 20 inch handle most of the time. I use an axe scabbard, so I like the shorter axe because it doesn’t hit me in the back of the head all the time. I also have 3 1/2, and 4 pounders with 28 inch handles, and a 6 pounder with 36 inch handle for big wood. I’ll get some pictures.

Fiskars makes some nice logging axes.
I really like my Fiskars tools and think the X25/X27 splitting axes are great, but they don't have a good pounding poll, in my opinion. I like the looks and size of the polls on the OX Head/Oschenkopf. To me the most important feature for driving wedges is a good size surface area to keep from chewing up and breaking the wedge.
