My Dragon Slayer splitting ax gets no shorter than 40" handles!
In a pinch I once tried a store bought 32" on it and it felt to me as if I lost half the ax head weight.
The head is 1.8kg, something like 4lbs.

That long eye head looks like a winner. I always wanted an Elwell.

The rounding pattern looks rad and I suspect it will split ok. I think they are both too bit heavy and poll short/tall to bang wedges really well. I bet the more conventional pattern takes off big limbs in one swipe and blows out monster chips when chopping. Has a pretty good profile.

Dunno. 32-34” hickory? I like the extra shoulder in the photo but not the straight haft. I doubt I would use one for “rounding”. Probably just slashing off limbs like you said. I like a long curve towards the end of the handle for a limber. Because the bit is so long, it might be nice to have more flat to the handle to help control deflection.

I use axes different than most people do...

I live close to the Arkansas Ozarks (1 mile) & the Quatichita Mountains.
I dont just split, I CHOP!
Hardwoods in the Ozarks.

Multiple times I've been hiking into the backcountry with nothing more than a axe to cut a "V" in a smaller/medium log & bend it between 2 trees to break, or buck some larger stuff for a campfire.

So this is my first year with a full sized axe head on short 28" handle.
Should be easy enough to pack in.

I have 4 Boys Axes but always wanted more weight.
