This showed up yesterday. Bout 5lb. Haven’t gotten to bang any wedges with it yet but it golfed a firewood round around the back yard with authority and felt good. Crazy long poll but balanced.

There is a bunch of info online on how to harden a non-hardened poll.
Didnt seem to involved & no special tools required.
Might be something to look into for the wedge bangers.

I might harden the whole head. Have an oven.

But that would be more for energy transfer (theory)…I don’t think plastic wedges will deform a steel head.

People use axes on splitting wedges (I cringe @ the thought).
Lots a mushroomed heads out there.

One article I read said it's not a good idea to harden the eye area & I think most do a zone hardening as a result.

@Gullet why not harden the eye?

I like the finish on his heads but not the handles…I like a more uniform finish.

I don't know what Fiskars makes their axe-heads out of, but pounding plastic wedges has put dents in the back of mine a few times.

No kidding ? Thought I read they aren’t intended to be used to hit with…I did with mine a bit and the small sharp poll chewed up my wedges.

That's what they say on the package, yes. I've been using mine for years.

Tonight I hung the blue Aussie cyclone on the bottom right. 4.5 lb. Same shape as a Stroax, just a little thinner poll. ***Rings like a Stro when smacking wood! Hmmm!

I also hung that big long narrow 5lb Norlund…that thing hits hard! - and does not vibrate the handle much at all. I think it’s gonna be the winner. Got some live oaks to drop in the mountains this weekend.

Prolly just a vinegar soak on those heads.
I see temper lines.

I prolly wouldn't ever use a HT oven to heat treat a axe head.
It would be hard to pin down the type of steel used & thus a HT protocol.

Plus, it would be preferable to only harden the bit and/or the poll only (not the middle or eye).
Zone hardening is key on striking tools (most all axes are zone hardened from the factory).

I bought a couple of OLD hatchets dirt cheap today...
A Plumb Eclipse carpenters & Sears Fulton/Merit.
They quit using the Fulton stamp in 1927. Lol

sure how much? i totally dont need another axe but what does that have to do with anything
I think I got around $40ish in it, but it’s probably not worth that. Up to you. I have a couple other long smaller heads I need to get rid of too.
