Rotton saw.

No matter what I did, it would not fire up.

Put a wire in the ignition plug and couldn't get a reliable spark to the cylinder.

I have another ignition and will have to swap it out and see how it goes.

The red light coil needs a real light ignition so if you swapped for the nicest of each make sure they match each other.
A red light era flywheel will work with other coils, but the bro coil needs the right flywheel to work right.

Ahh I have confused you
The red light is sitting on the floor in original trim waiting it's turn in line for some attention

I am currently building up 2 x 066's with no red light. Curve top ones.

I found my issue this morning with fresh eyes
I had set the coil distance but the Bolton half moved away from the flywheel when I tensioned it down.

Moved it back in to regulation business card gap and it fired on the first pull.

I had to go to work so I shut it down and drove to work content that it runs

Got home from work and headed out to the garage.
The wife said...... I know what your up to, your busting to make that saw run aren't you.

She was right :)

It popped first pull and then I just needed to tweak the screws to get it to start and idle cold.
Got it idling sweet and gave it a couple blips of the throttle and its really snappy.
I haven't taken it way up high in the revs yet. Will wait till I have a bar and chain on it and its nice and warm before I do any piss revving with it.
It does have a really nice compression POP to the idle note and pulled 150 psi in stock form with new rings and .020 squish before its first run.

I ran a tap through the stripped thread and took it from 5mm to 6mm,
Sealed off the bottom of the hole with tape and dribbled in some JB Weld

Tomorrow I will drill and tap it and see how it goes.

Question for folks running a velocity stack and pod filter setup on an 066/660

When the black plate between the carb and HD filter is removed, you lose the back support for the start/stop/choke lever.

How do you stop it coming lose and falling out?

The thread repair worked perfect!

It is now back together and running.
Starts super easy, very responsive and idles smooth, not changing rpm's.
I think this has a lot to do with all the new seals, no more sucking little bits of air changing the mix here and there.

The original saw would stall out if I came off full throttle and didn't give it a few blips before sitting it on the ground. I kind of had to baby it into idling after a hard cut, no matter how I tuned it.

My extra dig at the muffler side port.
I also over doubled the size of the hole of the front cover

Jobs left to do:

Get hi temp matte black paint to make the muffler look nice. I HATE the silver
Order a new roller chain catcher from the Stihl shop.
Paint the STIHL words on either side black again
Get a MAGNUM sticker for it which is cheaper than porting to make it cut faster

Which style choke lever do you have? Is it the thicker all plastic lever or the metal rod with plastic on just the end?

The lever with the metal rod doesn't need any extra support. The other style may.

Its all black plastic and it does not feel so good without the HD filter plate in place, hence why I asked.
I am sure i can make something, but I will do it with the 2nd 066.
It will be an ugly duckling, reject parts saw and will be a perfect experimental platform.

When JMS sorts out a payment method and I get the OEM jug and piston (no rush mate) I will use it to fiddle with building dodgy stuff on.
If I can make it look prety, it might make it over onto the No.1 best bits saw which I am in a bit of love with :worship2:

Got the velocity stack machined to match the carb today.

Fitted it up and fired the saw up.
It picked up about 300 rpm at idle, so I fed it a little more fuel to slow it back down.

It is now really snappy and responsive.

I have ordered an after market air filter cover that I can butcher, as I have an idea on how to keep the rear cover and run the K&N air filter.

While I am playing with air filters, I pulled out the max flow foam thingy that I bought a little while back and thought I would make something of it.
I had an old HD filter that was past its used by date that came with one of the saws, so I stripped the mesh and filter material (it doesn't fall out, trust me) and put it together.

I plan to cut a piece of black perspex as a backing plate but would like to know what those that use these (@jmssaws) use to clamp it down
Also, do you oil it or run it dry?

Yes you have to oil the foam filter, I could be wrong but I think J just uses the filter cover nut and tightens it against the filter with no plate.

Thought I had to oil it.... thanks mate

I am sure i have seen pictures of it with an orange plate across the back of the filter.

While I am thinking about it, I have another 066 question.
Is there a preferred performance carb? Similar to the WT194 on the 026.

WJ 10?
WJ 35?
WJ 48?
WJ 67?

if you cut some slots (or drilled holes) in the top of the air filter skeleton you could get a bit more flow but otherwise the orange AF "plate" like Mopar has in his pic likely keeps the screw fastener from deforming the foam where they contact
