I considered doing something like that but ran out of time.
I think I will just get a long reach dial gauge to speed things up. Its difficult using someone elses equipment who also uses it for his business.

Today was the first time I have used a lathe in 15 years so I wasn't as quick as you guys may be.
I would rather walk away and fight another day than stuff my one and only precious OEM jug

After I get my mandrel square within .001, I always put an indicator on the carriage and double check that the tool hits all 4 corners at the same place. They should be square from th OEM.

Oh the base cut was all good, it was squaring up the squish I had trouble with achieving

You stated base earlier Tony.

Does the mandrel that you cut to do your base have a nice square face?

Use adhesive backed sandpaper on it and sand the band flat. Go finer and finer.

As a last step, lay your cutting mandrel flat on your bench with the cutter sticking up and gently ream the edge.

Thats what I was about to suggest Al. The mandrel is made, no need to purchase a long reach, just use whats there.

Ahhh, the mandrel is just a rod to hold the jug for cutting the base.
I didn't cut the face flat, forgot that, but I will.

Not being able to get it perfect in a timely manner is why I cut by hand. You could have easily cut the .040" out by hand in the time you messed around trying to dial it in.

I noticed cutting mandrels mentioned?

Not being able to get it perfect in a timely manner is why I cut by hand. You could have easily cut the .040" out by hand in the time you messed around trying to dial it in.

The first one on my lathe took about 45 minutes to center the fixture and then the jug.
It only takes me about 10 minutes each jug now, but I have 2 indicators in the bore, one at the base, and one at the top, above the exhaust port

You slot the top of your mandrel and affix a HSS cutter, then turn the jug by hand while the mandrel is held in a vise

If I were in your shoes, I'd stick with what Al suggested; and use self adhesive sandpaper, like you get for auto body repair work

I've cut one on a lathe. It was a junk cylinder so it's in a box just for practice. I've cut another 30 by hand at least.
