Recently met up with someone to buy a clean looking translucent tank 357xp. Some fading but no exterior damage. We agreed on a few hundo, saw ran great, I said let me just pull the muffler before we shake.

Piston is scored, cylinder has some transfer on the backside, and I noticed it has transfer caps as well. Previous owner bought the saw and ran it until he bought a 572 and just didn’t want it anymore.

I offered him $50 and he took it.

Before I tear into this thing, it’s got transfer caps so it’s a 359 jug, right? If so, is there any value in trying to clean up and do a my first DIY port job with this, or go straight for a 357 aftermarket setup to keep this saw dirt cheap?

Otherwise has a new OEM carb, and cleaned up decent with a forester pro bar and a new stihl chain.

Thanks to those with more teardown experience than I!

You could do either, if it cleans up and a new Meteor or Duke's piston is about as cheap as you can get.
I put a Meteor 357 top on a 359 bottom end and just tightened tidied things up a little bit, didn't port and it runs fairly well.

Appreciate that. Given what I paid I’m just looking for a decent runner, nothing wild but I would like to try a little diy porting.

Have you tried the opposite, 357 bottom end with a 359 top?

What's the bottom end? Stuffers or no? Do you know why it's scored? Bad gas? Air leak? Will you be splitting the case? All, some, or most of these answers may shape your decision. Also, before you start more threads and/or ask more questions, take a look at some of the info that already exists on this site:

Yes, just happened to have. I probably still prefer it the other way around, but it ain't terrible bad by any means.

It’s got stuffers, I have a lot to learn admittedly but I hadn’t seen many posts where folks had a 359 topend on a 357 which is what gave me pause. Some folks have given me solid things to think about as I tear it down.

I believe the saw was straight gassed, piston was bone dry, wear on the exhaust side. Not planning to split the case if I don’t have to.
