I just caught myself reminiscing How and why I joined Arborist Site then How and when I ended up here on OPE.
AS was for me I needed answers on my Stihl 056 MAGNUM II then a few months later I was introduced to OPE by Definitive Dave. (First I knew Dave was on AS)
I began thinking that it would be a good thread for members to share what drew them join to OPE.
If you wish to ignore the truth you can embellish as much as your imagination is. able. Don't be surprised with comments you get.

UTube has a video of some one giving a fully automatic (Loaded) gun to a chimpanzee. the camp was empty in seconds.
APE with AK-47
Comments were worth reading.

I would rather hand a loaded gun to a chimp than some of the numbskulls I had to put up with when I worked at a gun shop. I was very glad that they had a strict rule of trigger lock stays on until the transfer goes through and the gun is paid for!

Took a concealed carry certification at a gun shop with a range in N.C. in the late 90s. Between the classroom and range, they had us drawing and dry firing in their showroom full of customers.

Our instructors are specifically not allowed to teach anything outside the approved curriculum. The only time you handle a firearm in the course is to demonstrate basic knowledge (how to load/unload, how to choose proper ammo, etc.) and the 7 yard range qualification.

I'm here because my local Stihl dealer basically useless, and no Husqvarna dealers around here. So fixing my own stuff was/is a necessity and i can usually find the info I need here. Good group here that's for sure.

I agree with you AND have the same problem.
You touched on a big issue. I have a friend that is all Husky and zero Stihl. The classic Chevy VS. Ford VS. Mopar topic.
Why do all 3 (Echo/Husqvarna/Stihl) rely on big box sales and compromise on service. It seems more intentional than Ignorant.

They all have issues. A little research goes a long way.

There is one actual Stihl dealer with in 30 miles of me the rest are farm stores, farm equipment dealers or Ace hardware. The dealer is a dik if you didn't buy it from them.
All but a couple of OPE was bought used or given to me as said dealer thinks the stuff is gold plated or diamond studded or something. The other places will at least try to help but usually say "we will have to send it in". Not sure if it's intentional (dealer is for sure) or ignorant but it irritates me to no end they won't/can't do anything in house.

The store I worked for had two mechanics that worked for it that covered all of the stores (probably about 15 all together), and they were located at their two main hub stores. Shipping was free since they traveled on the freight trucks. If it wasn't a hurry turn around time was about two weeks. We tried to take care of some of the small stuff so it wouldn't have to be sent out, but then our new local manager changed how things worked and we weren't able to to any repairs, our only job was to sell new and had to let the mechanic do any work. Usually I would take and blow off any dirty equipment so that the mechanic didn't have to worry about that and just get right to work. Our local management didn't realize/care about how much we were able to promote and sell when we were knowledgeable about common equipment problems and requested parts to have on hand.

Saw this thread and figured this might be a good one to introduce myself in! I’ve been in and out of the chainsaw hobby a few times. As a kid, I remember spending hours a day on AS looking at cool builds or doing my own research on whatever it is I was interested in at the time. As I have recently gotten (wayyyyyyyyyy) back into chainsaws, I’d go to AS and notice way too many ads and it did seem like a lot of the OG guys came here, so figured I’d start fresh and join up over here. I’m a hobbyists/weekend warrior but have recently dove into the vintage world and figured it was time to join up! Looking forward to learning from you all, and possibly getting to meet and run saws at some point!

Welcome to the forum!! What other vintage saws are you working on besides the Pro Mac 850? I really enjoy the older McCullochs (10-10, 200, D-44) and Homelite Super XL...hobbyiest here too!!

The 850 is the first.. lol I’ve had some older stihls and what not but for some reason the Mac’s perked my interest and found a decent deal on a running and complete 850 a couple of days ago.. but I feel like it won’t be the last as I’ve also grown interested in the Pioneer saws…

The Mac (PM850 at least) had been out of production for approx 12 years by the time I was born, so can’t say I’m super familiar with saws from that era! Most saws I have I run, don’t need to do much to them. The Mac is the first that I’ll be attempting to go thru and make as close to perfect as I can without selling any body parts

You're in good company here! One good thing about McCulloch is that they made so many saws and parts that it's pretty rare you can't keep one going.
Yeah I am finding that out quite quickly! I have been studying parts lists and plan to start tearing mine down and documenting what it is I have. I’ll try and get a thread started on it today, as I’m sure I’ll need some help! I posted it on one of the Mac Facebook pages recently but feel to really find all the info I’m going to need, the forums are the place!

Any Mac specific questions, hit up the McCulloch thread here...one guy here Mark Heimann has a huge knowledge base on Macs and has an even bigger collection (I think the ones in his attic that he hasn't got to yet out number the ones he has out on display in his museum)!
