My dad called and said the log splitter has been backfiring and now won't run.

OK guys, today we got the BIG SAW on the LITTLE BENCH!

Local tree guy brought it to me, first time I've played with one of these, so comments are not just welcome, but appreciated!

The piston is scored on the exhaust side only, and the guy swears it was not straight gassed, but was run at 50:1, and he thinks it may have over heated.

The saw looks in really good shape for a tree guy's saw, and he stated it is only used occasionally (usually stumping or felling the big ones). (He likes running 460s for his normal stuff).

The Hi screw was out to the limit, but it has the limiter at 3/4 turn (that will not remain).

I checked the squish, and it was a surprisingly (to me) tight 30/1000, so if I remove the gasket I may have to sand the squish band (would be a first for me).

Have not had a chance to vac test it yet, but I will, but do you guys think the piston fried the exhaust side just cause it got hot with the Hi set out to the limit? The saw is bone stock (right now).

The owner admitted the fuel filter had never been changed, and the fuel line also felt soft to me, so they they will both be changed.

Was surprised that the Air Filter seems to be the same as a 460 (so I have em in stock), but no such luck with the dp muff cover.

Like I said this is my first dance with one of these monsters, so any advice is welcome. Oh, that black plastic behind the carb that seems to be screwed through the gas tank, I leave them screws be, right? I also expected the carb to look larger.

I like the big fuel tank cap, and the very clear view of the fuel, much better than any of my saws, including the new 362.

The site would not let me post a 4th pic of the piston, even after I resize it, I don't know why. The file says HDR (the others do not), anyone got a clue?

Well Mike. How does the chain look? If you have a dull chain and really work the saw it produces so much heat it scores on the exhaust clutch side.
Is there gas in the tank? Check it for oil?

Exhaust side I would be on over heated with a dull chain. Remove the limiters and you're good on that part. Air filters are the same from the 44-880.

I touched up 2 race chains a guy sent back and that took 2 beer.

Limiters on a MS880?

None were on the one I have.

Talk the tree guy into 40:1 for them.

The OE buffers are soft. Stihl offers two more steps 'stiffer'.

Opening on the clip on muffler can be 'improved'.

But, you need to make a deflector to avoid burning the chain brake handle off.

I was expecting an 880, minimum, after all that.

Did he leave the chain with the 1122?

Yes, those tanks are wonderful.

Vacuum & Pressure test it before you tear it down, just to be certain.

It's just cheaper to find out now.

The owner stated that the employees will run the saw hard and with a dull chain. He said the fuel was 50:1, but it was old (the brake down up did not occur recently) so I dumped the gas (as he also recommended). Also, he just brought the power head, no B&C, so I can't check it, but it sounds like the likely cause. I recommended 40:1 to him about a year ago (after this saw failed), and he has been using 40:1. I also told him to use high octane, will have to check if he did that.

I think he just transferred the B&C to his 066, and then that started acting up on him, and he took that one to the shop and the 660 to me. If the repair for the 066 is not reasonable, that may also be coming my way. I know he got a quote on replacing the P&C on the 660. Don't know what they wanted, but he did not go for it (maybe they told him it was not worth it???).

I don't know why this site will not let me post my pic of the piston, it is not because of the size, but I resized it anyway and it still will not post.??? Will try again, but I wish I knew what was going on.

The owner is a real straight shooter, and I trust what he tells me, but he freely admits his employees don't have much respect for the equipment (specifically, the saws).

Since he stated they often use this saw for stumping, the dull chain theory makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the input, I appreciate it (but I will still vac test it, just to be sure).

My bench is very small, it is all relative! And this is the largest saw I have had on it or worked on.

Hand those employees a hand saw and let them learn to appreciate decent equipment.

That's a hard rule to teach: respect the man's equipment.

I think a grinding business would do good in your area & mine.

I've suddenly got enough chain to learn. [emoji23][emoji23]
