I still need to finish it. But it’s in the dining room…..
I did not mill the 4x4 frame. Lowes non treated 4x4s.

its the first slab off the log. middle of the log is about 50 inches wide!

I found the log first then convicned the wife I need A 3120 to mill it!

Been hearing about emerald Ash Borer for years and just hoped it wouldn't find us. I was wrong. I've got a lot of Ash trees in my woods. Some bigguns out there. And I've been setting aside white oak logs when I come across them. 20231220_153331.jpg20231219_160013.jpg

So I had a friend bring over his Lucas mill. Pretty sweet little setup if you don't need real wide boards. We milled up a bunch of white oak for wagon decks next year, and some Ash for framing lumber and to build some new firewood racks.

I burn a lot of wood making maple syrup. I cut it all at 32" and stack it on these racks right off the splitter. Then I cover them with used greenhouse plastic until I need them. This wood will be burned in the spring of '25. Damned shame to lose these ash trees, but it's kinda cool to drop a tree, mill 4x4s, build a rack, cut firewood out of the tops and fill the rack with the same tree. I designed this version to fold flat so I can stack them when they're empty. That way they'll take up less space and be easier to transport.20240108_163655.jpg20240108_163640.jpg20240111_094228.jpg20240111_094244.jpg

I'm planning to make 20-30 of these. They each hold about 40% of a cord. Hopefully they'll last a long time and I won't have to make more. Tried to make them heavy duty enough to last a couple decades.

Looks good Ryan. And really cool you’re utilizing those trees from top to bottom.

The post and beam for my cabin is Ash (6.5" X 6.5"). The cabin is 20' X 24' and 2 stories high. I milled the Ash with a Beam Machine and a chainsaw from trees that storms had blown down.

Ash will not resist rot like Oak. Keep it off the ground and stain it soon if you want it to last.

Ash, Black Cherry, White Oak, Chestnut Oak and Shag Bark Hickory are my favorite logs to mill.

I also milled the furniture for the cabin from Oak and Hickory.
