My upstate cabin is 20 X 24, but 2 stories high. It replaced the 12 X 20 one story high that just never seemed big enough if you had more than 2 or 3 people. We insulated the walls on the second floor. The upstairs is for sleeping and playing cards.

We are off the grid (in the Catskill Mtns, 2,200 feet up) and have a 55 gal woodstove for heat and solar panels for electric lights.

The frame is post and beam Ash (milled with the chainsaw), but the outside is just stained 5/8" plywood with a layer of cement board around the bottom to protect it from the porcupines.

That's nice looking place Mike. I really like the post and beam. I hear that about not having enough room. Lol My main cabin is 16x40...could definitely use some more room.

One of the local tree guys got hired to take down this large box elder and didn’t want the main trunk to go to waste so I’m supposed to mill it this week or next for him. See if it’s sold or not may be good may be junk but if nice with lots of flame it will be a 40” or so center log slab.

Painfully slow. I was 6 short to finish the house trim. I must have cracked 6 in the past. This would be 104 that I cut that turned out good. 20% become firewood because of chipout.

Wow. You're gutsy resawing barn beams. I would expect to hit 14 nails on the first run.

A blade could handle quite a few nails unless you cut the lengthwise. Some were old tapered square nails.

Based on the size and age it may be Chestnut. Was very common before the blight.

My equipment is lighter weight and wouldn't fair well. I would definitely cringe at the thought of running that through my planer.

I gave the old Milwaukee router a workout today.

Torx screws countersunk every 2 feet.
Towards the end of the flooring(last 5.5 ft), I switched to spruce that hasn't been planed because that area will be covered by a wood stove, staircase and a firewood rack.

I hate to bump a three year old picture, but that floor is amazing. Have anymore pictures after finishing?

My wife asked "Are you ever going to build something, to replace that box you whacked together, to hold up the tv 15 years ago?" Actually, I think it was 12. But, whatever.
She's happy now.

Some ash logs I cut the yr before (24). some small and some bigger logs.

My alottment shed I used them green . I needed to be able to make a covered space so I could actually dry some more wood.

The last few weekends involved relifting the floor and trying to make the gaps smaller as well as using some of the extra wood I had kept to fill in the extra space,
I did a quick angle grinder attachment sanding on most of the floor, 40grit then 80grit followed by some boiled linseed oil diluted with the same amount of whit spirits to pop the colour
I was asked by some others why am I doing all this as it’s just an allotment shed..
I replied because I have the wood and want to use it and for it to last



And this bigger wood (ash) I cut and made a much needed shelf in my porch/untility room. 1.5” thick 13” tapering to 14” wide 100.5” long.
I sanded it the same way with the angle grinder but went down to 120 & 240grit .
I actually did both sides as I wasn’t sure which way up I would use it.

The Ash has more color and character to it than any I've seen here.
