I did enjoy giving the 288 a whirl today. Easy to see why it's so popular, between the 372 and 394 it is closer to the 394 in displacement but closer to the 372 in handling and feel. I did notice I could feel the engine more at lower RPM and idle, but it smooths right out in the cut at higher RPM. Two thumbs up for the 288

Well in that case, you might as well check on the fuel tank and see if it's available at your convenience. Thanks. Matt....

OK Matt; here's a look at 288 exterior parts still available and prices.

Tank--$95
Starter complete-$76
Starter housing-$18
Chain brake--$100
Top Cover--$30
Top handle--$53

Wrap and "G" handles are NLA

Available decals: 281 and 288 starter, and clutch cover.
NLA decals: 288G and 288 lite starter, and top cover

Most of those parts will probably be made in Brazil, cause that's where they are still making the saws. Quantities on hand are in the single digits, but I don't read anything into that yet.

That's crazy Bob, I just looked up a 346 starter housing and it was like ~$68.00 for just the housing.

I would LOVE to get a housing for $20.00, what am I missing?

"ASSY" means assembly; it's a complete starter.

Housing number is 537102702.

Those numbers are for the older starter. The "new edition" with the diamond shaped decal is even a little cheaper.

Thank you Bob, this is a very early 346 XP and the IPL shows the housing part number to be 503887701 which when you go to order it supersedes to 537104702. The original part number for the complete assembly shows to be 503887601, odd.

Edit: Just plugged in the original part number for the complete assembly and it supersedes to the same 537104702. For some strange reason they have the early 346 starter housing superseding to a complete starter.

Bear in mind that the early starters used different internals. They had a smaller pulley and spring set up. So, the old guts won't fit the newer housing and vice versa. The old starters are easy to spot as they have fewer "ribs" than the newer ones. I think the change was around 2002-2003?

Bob this is the starter in question. Serial number on the saw is a 2006, so that is the newer one, correct?

Thank you very much Bob, I will put together a list and have my wife call it in at your store? Is that the preferred method. I have been and will be working past your business hours lately. If parts meander in at different times you can just hold em until they all (or most) get there, so as to minimize shipping costs and multiple packaging/handling for you. Once again thank you for your time and effort, gone above and beyond in my opinion... Matt

I don't know you or yourn, but that fancy saw you got there, sounds like you're running one of them fancy Piltz Notsaws .
I'm more of one of them Don't ask Don't tell kinda fellas, but I will definitely try not be overly critical about your creative uses for Red Armor...
