This time of year I help out at a local saw rebuild shop, on my bench are 11 ms462, older style, with cracked pistons, 3 of those also have stripped plug holes too. They are all waiting on cylinders. Sounds like they got 2 years of hard use out of them, all from a tree service company. Rest of the saws im rebuilding are 4 572xp bad crank bearings, and one ms440 in for restoration.
On the 462 subject, I actually see way more of those and 500i's come in that have stripped plug holes than cracked/broken pistons.
I would still own a early 462. But knowing what I know, I would just swap the piston out after a season of full time sawing. It appears that the crack is caused by wear, and excess piston skirt slap. Slapping skirts is my thing so there is that lol
