MS462 Design Changes

The 462 has undergone some serious design changes. The case, cylinder, and piston are are different now.

These two pictures show the changes to the slug and the cases.

The cylinder is of course also different now.

This means that the old style top end will fit on the new case, but the new style will not fit on the old cases.

It also means that the extra old type top end I keep in stock ported is not of use to me now. I try to keep and extra ported cylinder in stock for most of the saws I do regularly. Now I'll need to replace this one with the new one.

If anyone is interested in buying this setup, send me a message. It comes with the piston, rings, wrist pin, clips, muffler that is port matched to the cylinder, heat shield, gasket, and front cover.

Not really. They just decided that the divertor under the piston wasn't needed. That makes it simpler.....

Also to consider is that there was a rash of broken pistons on the 462. This change could be more about strengthening the slug than anything else I suppose.

No. The port is taller now though. So that might mean a gain in performance.

I have no inside info.....yet. I'll try to find out.

Sticker on the front of the new saw is silver. That's the only change I can see.

Id be interested in what you find out. I’m more interested in one again now that I know the 462 is now available in an Arctic wrap version.

I'm sure there is a service bulletin on it. But Stihl recently locked me out of their website.
