Have you noticed a difference when running them stock?
Yes. They aren’t quite as jazzy.

I don’t mean that in a bad way. Just maybe a chance for a different recipe. Before, I could only port them 1 way because I refused to raise the exhaust on them to make them more peaky. Now we have options

Is there any way to prevent it from happening on all the old version saws out there? Can the new piston be installed in the old version saw to fix it?
Need to quit doing the reset every time they use them and quit piss revving.

The 461 and 661 will do the same thing if they’re held wide open out of the wood long enough. The deflector hits the inside of the piston

Just a poorly designed piston Mike. Metal is too thin. They should have picked this up and corrected it before it went to market. They do their testing in regions that have all soft wood. About time they send some saws to the USA loggers to put the saws through the paces here. etc...
Looks like they corrected the issues in V2...

They test saws where the wood is hard...

Here are pics of a 461 that came across my bench last year, exactly as Kev says, the deflector under the piston took a knock, disintegrated, and took out the piston - the result is carnage.

I guess the reset for m-tron 3.0 was a bad idea...

We have one of the earlier MS462's at work and a new top end has been on order since early December of 2021.
So, I guess my question is will Stihl ever furnish one ? Or, since it is a tree service would paying $400 or whatever for me to rebuild it be a bad investment in a questionable reliability saw ?
I'm thinking of telling them we can't do it whether I can scrounge up a top end or not.
It banged hard enough I had to re-center the crank shaft. May just be a bad idea.
