3/4 of a lb on the nose is noticeable. On the powerhead end I can't notice it. I'll take a 2lb heavier powerhead with wider handle spacing over one with closer handle spacing like the 44/46 family with 28-34" bars.

To me it doesn't matter if a 460 will run a 36" bar or not, they feel terrible with a long bar,my 395 is more comfortable to carry all day with a 36"

A super nose heavy saw is not user friendly.

I've never had more than a 20" on my 460,if I need a bigger bar I'll use a bigger saw that will oil it and run and balance it better.

A 460 clutch is the same size as a 034

A light bar would help but I put a 28 on my 46 and never even tried to use it.

In the woods you better set the break before you set it down cause it goes straight on its nose and I hate that.

395 with a 36" still sits up.
Role around like a ball in the bed of a truck though, damn husky

They roll down a hill real good with a wrap handle.

The ported 044 with a 28" light bar and the 661 R dogs makes an excellent light weight felling saw for most of the trees we have around here. The 36" is also a light bar, and only is used now & then. If I planned to use it regularly, I'd put a larger power head on it, but that ported 460 pulls it surprisingly well for when I need to use it.

Most of the saws I've acquired recently have been "opportunity knocking". I've had "discussions" about an 084 and a 660, but I don't like to count my chickens till they hatch, so we will see. I'm also trying to get another 046, which I don't need at all, but if opportunity knocks .... There is a local place that is going down, so you have to strike while the iron is hot.

I'm going to build a few 288/066's and at least one 394/395

BUT

Chances are that I'll be looking at quite a few 661's in the future, NIB if necessary. I could be pursuaded differently, but its going to take a saw that can hold above 12,000 in the cut with a 36" running 404, or a torque monster to do it

That is in 20", in 24" the E is 10.3 oz lighter than the ES. (3 lb 0.1 oz / 3 lb 10.4 oz)

I believe I figured out EXACTLY what happened to the MS440. The saw had a brand new plug, air filter & fuel filter, and I figure someone tried to tune the carb.

As the picture shows, Stihl recommends that the Lo be out 1/4 turn, But they put the picture of the Lo right over the Hi screw, and obviously someone messed up! The Hi was only out 1/4 turn because of the stupid instructions on the saw!!!

Hope that they were not adjusting to compensate for an air leak. Just sayin...[emoji6]

Stock 394/5 will hold 10.5k with full comp on a 130 dl bar in red oak

1) Why would they go "lean" to compensate for an air leak?

2) I pulled the limiters and set both Hi & Lo at about 1&1/16 turn out and the saw starts easy, runs great, idles fine and four strokes, so I am very confident there was nothing else wrong with it. It is also only 10 years old (Jan 2006 Mfg date), so less than half the age of my 2 044s. It will be at the Upstate NY GTG.

My ported 044 (044#2) was a little hard to start after the 2 & 1/12 months of inactivity, but is fine after she starts. It is a low hour saw, but also my oldest, with a SN starting with 120. I'm thinking it may be needing some seals (which I did to 044 #1 last year) in the not too distant future. I believe all the other rubber in it has been updated.

Another question for those with more knowledge than me, the 440 has a Walbro snorkel carb (both 044s have Zama non snorkle), but the 440 plugs the snorkel. Why do 440s plug the snorkel instead of leaving it open like a 460???

The snorkel is for saws set up with HD filter bases.

Never seen a plugged snorkel on a 440.
Please elaborate more or post pictures
