1) Why would they go "lean" to compensate for an air leak?
Well you never know what the prior owner did. Maybe they turned it richer and it didn't change much then they went leaner? Who knows when and why they turned the screws. I never trust the settings on a saw of unknown history regardless of the age or condition. A pressure and vac test is very quick and simple especially when you have the saw partially torn down. It would rule out any issue of an air leak when you go to fire it up. Glad it's running well for you. They all won't be like that!
