Bring that Hybrid to the GTG. I can also always build it as a 440, and convert it to a hybrid if the 046 that I got my eye on does not come my way!

So what your saying is that it's just like the rest of Daves saws?:picknose::stick::couch:

Used the Randy method to clean the transfer out of that 440 cylinder this afternoon. Won't say it is perfect, but it looks darn good, and it was a mess when I started on it. If I get the piston on time, I may have that running for the GTG too!

So, does that mean we can break Dave's saw before he even sees it???

The envelope came w/o the parts. The automated postal processing system removed them. They are being re sent. It will be at the GTG.

Worked on the MS440 yesterday. Removed the piston and cleaned things up a bit. That saw was filthy! Never saw a saw with so much crud in by the control lever, will have to remove it to clean it all. Will do some more clean up on it today, and I hope the piston will be here today or tomorrow.

UPS delivered the parts today at 3:20, I cut the key and had the saw running by 4:05. It sounds real good, but I don't have a B&C on it yet. I don't think that flywheel is gonna move again in my lifetime. Was almost surprised I did not strip the nut.

Popped on the second pull on choke and started on the next pull on high idle. At first, did not sound quite right, then I realized the chain brake was on! Once off, it sounded great. Did not even have to adjust to get it to idle.

Hope to put it in some wood tomorrow. Have an appt tonight, and two on Sunday, but left tomorrow open. Can't wait.

Also made some progress on the MS440. The piston is in and the cylinder is glued down. Squish measured 19/1000. That should be running soon too. I'm stoked!

Well, I got to put my saws to wood today for the first time in two and a half months. I took down a solid Oak tree, and a hollow Hard Maple. Only spend a half a day there, but gave several of the saws a good workout. The 460 with the 046-D jug that Al ported for me did most of the bucking, and ran very strong. I also gave 044#1 a good workout, that saw is not ported but I recently deleted the base gasket, and I was please with how it ran (squish is 20/1000).

I like using the ported 044 with the 28" light bar for felling, and dropped both trees with it, then I took the 40+" Oak stump (I dropped the tree last year) down another level with the 460 Randy ported for me (it has the 36" bar).

When I got home I tinkered with the MS440 I got recently. Guess I cleaned up the jug OK, cause there was no smoke when it started, and it just ran clean. I'm pleased so far, and looking forward to putting that one into some wood. With the gasket deleted, squish was 19/1000. I also advanced the timing and installed a dp muffler with a large main port.

I noticed this saw has an all metal flywheel. Is that unusual for a 440? Is it just the early ones? Fingers crossed that it will run as good (or at least close) to the 044s.

If you are going to use a saw for limbing, getting the weight down is just as important as improving performance, and I reduced the weight of the MS440 by almost 3/4 of a pound, and all of it from the front of the saw which will also improve the balance!

The Huztl dp muffler is 2.3 oz lighter than the stock muffler, and since it is well vented I also removed to heat shield (saving another 1.1 oz). I then replaced the 20" ES bar with a 20 " E bar, saving another 8.3 oz. Total wt saving: 11.7 oz, or almost 3/4 of a pound.

If you are using the saw for limbing for a prolonged period of time, you will notice that difference.

After putting the B&C on it, I did a few test cuts with it. I think I'm gonna like this saw! Will know better when I compare it to my 044#1 in the same wood.

An E bar is half a pound lighter than an ES? Interesting. They're both laminated, correct? Only difference is RSN?

That is in 20", in 24" the E is 10.3 oz lighter than the ES. (3 lb 0.1 oz / 3 lb 10.4 oz)

I believe I figured out EXACTLY what happened to the MS440. The saw had a brand new plug, air filter & fuel filter, and I figure someone tried to tune the carb.

As the picture shows, Stihl recommends that the Lo be out 1/4 turn, But they put the picture of the Lo right over the Hi screw, and obviously someone messed up! The Hi was only out 1/4 turn because of the stupid instructions on the saw!!!

E bar is much lighter, basically a homeowner laminated bar. I use the 18" E bar on my 361 to block down bigger stuff, just because of the light weight.

I've used 20" E bars a lot w/o any problems, and I just got 2 24" E bars in .063 that I'll be using and plan to mill with. Will let you know if I have any problems, they are certainly a lot less that the "light" bars!
