After the pin and e-clip is in its a lot easier to compress the spring to put the bushings and bolt in that hold the brake handle to the chain cover.

Now for the bushings and bolt that hold the handle to the cover.

It's done! Ready to move on to something else.

Judging by the picture it's time to install the P/C . Parts to be used.
First I oiled and installed the wrist pin bearing.

The installed the piston. Hers a shot of the underside of the piston showing where it was lightened. Remeber,porting it was a no, no. So I lightened the piston. Should have weighed before and after.
I installed one of the wrist pin clips before installing the piston. After the wrist pin was pushed home the last clip was installed. At this point it also good to make sure the piston is clocked right. The ring was not installed yet since I planned to grab the squish to see if I.was going to do a gascket delete.

Got the squish and it got the gasket delete. Still no porting.
Here's the squish without the gasket. There lots of room for modding this cylinder. The squish with the gasket is .0195 more then the dimensions below.
Ring was installed, I must have forgot to grab a picture? I did have a very blury picture that I am sure showe the ring on the piston. Oh well. Cylinder is on the crank. I did put a gasket maker on as well.
Looking in the exhaust port. No, I did not port it. Just cleaned it a little. The port is not very uniform.

And here is where the ports are at timing wise. Just a thumbnail hopefully if somebody want them belad enough they will have to join to read them.

Going by the thumbnail I believe it will be easy to see. Plan failed!!

Time to install the carb mounting plate/intake bulkhead. Make sure the intake boot fits properly and the pulse line seats as it should.
And the bulkhead is in. But where's the bolts? I somehow missed that picture as well.
Now it's time to install the carb. And before that can be done it needes a good cleaning. I forgot to do that before hand!

When I pulled the carb apart I found a couple interesting things. The first thing was this little spring just hanging out in there. He literally has no home in there. Somebody was in there and somehow got a spring in there. It's not even part of the parts diagram for the carb.

Take a look.

The next thing was both the high and the low speed screws had Teflon tape on the threads.

Back together, but I left that spring out. I would love to know how it got in there. I really like these cans of compressed air for working on carbs.


Carb gasket fitted. The hole was smaller that the bore of the carb.

Throttle and fuel line hooked up to the carb.

Finished mounting the carb. I put the filter retainer, carb and gasket together before fastening it to the bulkhead.
And there installed. Make sure the fuel line is not pinched or going to rub. Same with the kill wire. Before installing the bolts make sure the sleeve for the throttle lever is installed in the handle.
Then clip the filter on.

Now for the muffler.

Make sure the baffle goes in the correct way, if you plan to keep it.
I tweeked the shark gills a little. Will it help? Doubt it would be noticed.
Installed. I did spray some high temp paint just to make it look good, plus smell like a new saw after she gets warm..... Am I nuts?? Please!! Don't awnser that!!!
Put the bolts on, then the gasket.

Done.

Installed the top cover. Remember, this is not getting new plastic. I had to use what was there. It cleaned up a lot, but still far from what it could or should be.
Another angle.

Now let's install the handle. Two bolts on the side.
Two screws on the bottom.


And this might be the best looking part of the saw!!

There's a lot of room to improve the port timing. If the base was cut to get the squish where it should be. Then there would be more room to work with.

It makes me want to buy one just to do it and compare it to this one.

That would be an interesting comparison. I want one too. Figure with all the 50,51 and 55s out there should be a fun saw to port, test, swap cylinders etc....for scientific purposes of coarse

Let me to the exhaust side of the cylinder and remove the muffler. Just two nuts and off it comes. Again, *cough* it's a 5/16 socket.

The two exhaust bolts just slip into a Grove in the cylinder. Simple and cheap.

What say y'all? Looks like this muffler could use a little help in the breathing department. It's sad how choked these thing are from the factory. But,it give boys a reason to mod their toys.

There was a muff recall early on. Went to dealer, he did not know. Went in office, came back said sure enough and wanted my old one in exchange. We did not at all get along afterwards and I never traded, so do not know the difference.

Thats interesting, being it was that long ago, do you remeber how far you opened it up?

Yes indeed, there's definitely room for improvement. There's a couple.things I don't like. First, is the open transfers. Second is the choke. That really limits how far you can open up thebintake side. It's a real bottle neck. Really the biggest downfall of the saw.

Muffler has an L shaped baffle.
I enlarged the holes, the exit, and deflector.
If it had helped I would have went bigger.
There is talk on here of the 50 choke but I can not find it.

Okay, did your muffler look like the one on this saw?

As for the choke, I will post some pictures to show what I am talking about.

The choke switch on the back of the top cover, right above the handle has a metal tab inside hooked to the sliding choke switch. This metal tab, when the switch is pushed up into choke position, pushes against the center of the air filter. When the center of the air filter is pressed inward, it blocks the air intake horn leading to the carb. That's the choke and how it works. The intake horn is very restrictive, if this were change, a more air could be pulled through the carb at a higher velocity. Picture's below for reference.

Look at the center of the filter. This is where the choke switch hits when it engaged and pushes it inward. When the filter is pressed inward, the little (about 3/4 of an inch) round nubin presses against the air intake horn and effectively chokes it.


Here is the intake horn (not sure if that's the correct lingo) that the filter presses against to create the choke.

Though I have not confirmed it. I've read in several threads the 44mm 50, 45mm 51 and 46mm 55 cylinders have the same bolt pattern and are interchangeable(all share the same stroke) The 50 special was a 45mm closed port....Hyway also makes a 46 mm closed port....

There's options for a better cylinder. Nice! I'm sure a carb swap could be done and the appropriate linkage added to get rid of the current choke.
