Just an example , so the handle is above head 1/4 - 3/8 “ . and handle is splade outward above head when you set wedge in , and barrel wedge it .

That head isn’t going anywhere, don’t care how hard you hit it ,

An axe or maul head , is only as good as the fitment of handle to head , most box store axes and mauls are hydraulic pressed in and will eventually come loose because of that issue of fitment,

It has a gap front to rear and a shelf on the sides. I’m gonna try getting the shelves off with some emery cloth so it will sink deeper until it’s tight front to rear, and get some stickup past the head.

Skinny there on the left is getting loose on her handle…what say ye axeperts? I have sunk the wedge deeper a couple times. I was gonna wiggle the head up a little, sand the shelf out, and try to sink the head deeper on the handle.

I make a steel wedge out of flat steel, hammer it in till the handle starts "ringing", then secure it by drilling a hole through it (ax head already has a hole in it for just this purpose) and drive a nail through it.
Works PERFECT, handle will break before You're ever gonna loose that wedge!

Any other way of securing my ax head to the handle always failed.

Keep Your ax/handle dry, water will make the wood expand then retract upon drying resulting in an increasingly looser ax head.

Wilhelm mentioned earlier how skinny double bits are & that they are only good for felling, so I mic'd a nice convex cheek Woodslasher single bit (3.5#), and a Kelly Perfect DB (3.5#) at their widest points & the single bit was only .02" wider.

I dont personally use a DB, but I might start!
Seems like the most versatile axe.
I may break out the 4# Flint Edge & try some splitting with it before too long.
It may be the ideal camp axe.

Still, the ax heads look skinny, maul & maul/ax hybrids have checks.

Axes and mauls are two different breeds.

I have some axes to post, but not tonight!

She’s new, but I checked the bolts and they are pretty tight. To me, at least if they do start to loosen, a little loctite and muscle will put everything back where it belongs

IMHO, it looks like A LOT stronger connection than a handle wedged thru an eye.
Cant go wrong with Helko, a proven design I'm sure.
