My wedge in my mail head fell apart the other day beating. Cut a new one out of some mulberry. It wedged in the handle good but after beating the hell out of it it spit the wedge back out.
The taper of the neck on the handle is probably too steep, as well as the angle of the wedge and it's slot.

I think I cut it a click short originally a few years ago. It’s holding good for now. I’ll post a picture of my 5 pounder which I believe I did a better job on.

My wife got me the H&B Forge GOS hawk for me for Christmas. Great for camping/bushcraft work, spoon carving, and hunting. I’ll probably cut3-4 inches off of the handle, but overall, I’m pleased with it.

Am I the only one securing ax/hatchet handles with steel wedges (read: flat steel stock rough ground into a wedge like shape!) and then securing said steel wedge with a pin (read: nail) straight through the head, handle & wedge?

Ever since I started doing this I never again lost a wedge nor had a head come loose.

I make a steel wedge out of flat steel, hammer it in till the handle starts "ringing", then secure it by drilling a hole through it (ax head already has a hole in it for just this purpose) and drive a nail through it.
Works PERFECT, handle will break before You're ever gonna loose that wedge!

Any other way of securing my ax head to the handle always failed.

Keep Your ax/handle dry, water will make the wood expand then retract upon drying resulting in an increasingly looser ax head.

I dug out old posts.

The handle on that 8lb maul broke on my son first trip out. Grain looked good but wasn’t.

Chiselbit’s apprentice broke the handle on the green cyclone too. It had 50/50 grain…

People at work insistently asked me for a Christmas hint for something nice I probably wouldn’t buy myself…OK, borntrager it is. Hat was from a customer from the north.

Top head for butchering wood, bottom head for shaving it.
