It takes a handle that isn't on the shelf around here. Took me two tries.

It's smaller, shaped different, bigger radius. You have to take a lot off to get it in, then spread it a whole lot to snug it up. First time I took too much off and couldn't spread it enough to snug against the big radius. A round wedge would probably work better. I could've been more patient shaping it too.

Good wedge banger

Gets stuck as a splitter. You want double convex Ala BBR wood bullet or like that weco maul. Flat cheeks on the bit grip and get stuck in the wood

I handpicked council at baileys

I’ve gambled with $15 handles from Madsen’s. Grain isn’t always perfect but I haven’t broken one yet. Took a lot more fitting than the council

In the bushes, just costs time to find a long enough straight grown cornelian cherry stem with a decent OD.

Gotta let it season slowly.

Turning it down into a handle I am still working on.

None of my local hardware stores have what I need and want.

I've been buying handles 4 at a time from a guy in Slovenia, via Etsy. It's hard to get handles with the larger eye size here in New Zealand, even with freight these don't work out too bad

I had this 4lb Kelly woodslasher on a wallhanger curved handle (pretty grain but prone to break due to runout) and noticed it had a decent poll so I yanked it.

And stuck a council handpicked handle in it. Liking the councils. Good fit with minimal fitting.

New fave banger I think.

Nope!
He's just too lazy to fab up a DragonSlayer.
He's got most specs he'd need to get started.

Although, I can relate.
My efforts to convert a meh-ax head into a DragonSlayer copy stopped dead in the water so to speak.
Life is taking its toll.

My DragonSlayer ax head is only 1.8kg.
Was most likely around 2.0kg when new.
I can swing it all day long not getting tired.

Beaver Tooth is my preferred handle. They’re a better priced handle than Whiskey River and make a wider variety. House Handle is another one that is highly recommended.

Buying through Beaver Tooth’s website you have to wait what seems like forever, but they also sell at an eBay seller called “tennfarmboy,” which ships much faster.

8 lb is huge and heavy to use to drive wedges and the bevels to mate the halligan tool kill its usefulness splitting wood, but 8-10lb is ideal for driving an adze around a metal door stop, driving hitting the spike through lock hasps, or driving the fork to get hinges. And Council’s axe swings more like a sledge hammer with a beveled end, which makes it great for its intended purpose.

Tennessee Hickory makes excellent handles. Lot more reasonable than most.
Will make anything you need.
