A guy in the mountains keeps breaking the head off this monster maul. We welded it again and my son and I tested it in some one summer dried Euc. I think it took 10 swings of the maul and then went to the sledge for 20 more. Another piece I managed to split off with 10 swings of the maul.

I have 5 steel wedges, 10" long x 3" wide, 2-1/2" thick, sharpened, and smack them with around a 6# mallet. So far they've disassembled even the tough stuff. @julie wolf might have pictures...

The one and only wood species I encountered that wouldn't split is red beech - its grain grows wavy, not straight, not twisted.
Old folk claims it will stall tractor PTO powered hydraulic splitters and break PTO shafts on mechanical ones.

When I encounter anything that won't crack when I hit it with my Dragon Slayer I just noodle it!

Piper found this old steel falling wedge in our strip the other day, anybody know anything about them? We were wondering how old it might be. When did fallers start using plastic wedges?E9EE637E-53F3-4E1C-8FD2-34305E36DCC9.jpeg
