My dedicated wedge bangers are a Gransfor Bruk 3 1/2# Yankee, a Collins 5# rafting pattern, and the Stihl Pro Universal which nearly gave me carpal tunnel hand filing the edge. The Stihl is okay for small trees, but I find the current offerings of European axes tend to be on the light side. I found the Collins with a loose handle at an antique shop for $7 a few years ago. It is my go to.
My two wedge bangers ……. Painted Chrysler blue, you NEVER see this color in nature !!IMG_7272.jpeg

I split with a 6lb maul, but REALLY use axes & hatchets come Winter time (Deer Camp).
Prolly more than most.
I'll step aside now & let the men talk axes. Lol

Had an Aussie import this to me.

6lb 36”

I only took a few whacks, like it.doesn’t get stuck. Only the hydro splitter or maaaybe an 8lb and a lot of work would bust that half cured red gum euc.

Some of the old vintage Mauls stand out in performance & design geometry...

Walter's, Warren, Mann (must be marked Mann, not hardware store marked "M").
Plumb & TT, Rixford (good luck finding a Rixford).
Prolly the best heads in the 6lb category.
I use wedges for the stringy stuff.
I just cut em shorter out camping so they split easier.

Axes are just a cool hobby & like saws, the hunt is part of the reward.

Sharpened up this old Woodslasher hatchet a couple of weeks ago.
Hung it on a old used handle that had used motor oil on it (I have 2 brand new handles I could have used but refused) but its gonna be a user.
I even sandblasted that handle hoping to get the oil out, nice hatchet IT BITES DEEP! Lol
It's pretty sweet, takes a KEEN edge & has excellent balance.

Open sheet rock sand paper works great for getting wax off new handles. Water on it to make it look nice made the grain fuzz up…my dye process does the same…burnish the fuzz off with fine steel wool for a very smooth finish.
