One of my last projects for today was swapping the guts out of my old recoil into a new housing.

Pretty straight forward, remove the center screw and 4 small ones on outside of the pulley shroud.

Yay...every mans favorite thing to frig around with. Might as well be a snap ring for the amount of frustration these things have the potential to bring.

Just grab it tightly with a pair of needle nose pliers where shown, emphasis on tightly. The spring lifts out still coiled and drops into the new housing with little to no hassle. Bullet dodged...this time.

Lastly put all the guts back in place and wind her up. Easy Peasy.

I did have to shave this area to clear the spark plug wire where it comes out of the coil. Something to be aware of, if it doesn’t fit flush don’t force it.

I’m going to retro this 272 spike onto the 262. I absolutely despise the tiny one that it came with because it does nothing to keep the muffler off the wood. If it works well I’ll do the same to my 254.

Just an idea Josh. It may take some work but maybe use a small set of 372 dogs. They have the chain catcher already and acts as a kick stand too.
It’s like you were reading my mind Dale:). I put a set of small 372 dogs on my 357 and really like them. I think I’ll go that route instead of ruining the old 272 dog.

You may want to go back and look at your chain adjuster it looks kind of short, and the little rubber/plastic square washer should be up front in the notch on the screw. Looking good on the so far. I didn't know you could use rubber av's on it as well, all the ones I've seen or had, had the spring av same ones as a 288

Thanks for bringing up the chain adjuster, it didn’t look right to me when I installed it and forgot to ask the question. Your comment confirmed my suspicion that it may be too short.

And Duh (on me)! Of course that’s where that rubber piece goes! Makes sense and a lot of it! Every saw I’ve torn apart had it at the end so that’s where I always put them. Lmao!!!!! I need to fix that on my 288 and 254, im a moron. Lol!

The mounts are rubber because I’m using a 257 tank. Perfect fit so long as the 257 mounts are used. Have to use the 257 style tank isolators that mount to the bottom of the crank case also. 262 isolators are cone shaped and the 257’s are nearly flat like the 254’s.

Very nice build explanation.

Your kill wire is routed incorrectly. It actually comes routed over the carb adjust grommet and then back down again. I agree that how you did it makes more sense, but that’s how they routed them. It’s usually blue in color from the factory.

The 120 and 144 are the same, but the 144 has annoying small needles that are nearly impossible to find with a screwdriver if the limiters are removed.

I’ve forgotten that little oil input grommet myself. Oil goes everywhere but the bar.

Just for FYI, the 254, 257 tank is the same as the 55.

Good info, didn’t know the 55 tank was the same also. Lots of ways to skin this 262 tank cat.

What carb you have Josh, 87, 120,144?

I have a 120 Dustin. Eventually, I’m going to mod a 199 for the 262 then install the 120 on my 254.

Yes sir that’s how the wire is routed on my 254, up and over the adjuster grommet which I don’t really like. Figured since I was making my own wire I could route it low and out of the way. Thanks for pointing that out, wouldn’t want people thinkin that the wire up and over the grommet was wrong. I’ll edit my previous post to explain what’s normal to avoid spreading bad info. I looked for blue wire in my box ‘o’ wire, but didn’t have any:oops:.
