I just caught myself reminiscing How and why I joined Arborist Site then How and when I ended up here on OPE.
AS was for me I needed answers on my Stihl 056 MAGNUM II then a few months later I was introduced to OPE by Definitive Dave. (First I knew Dave was on AS)
I began thinking that it would be a good thread for members to share what drew them join to OPE.
If you wish to ignore the truth you can embellish as much as your imagination is. able. Don't be surprised with comments you get.

What is it about chainsaws that is so addicting? Feeling the power in your hands? Getting to make something go boom? Knowing that we are killing mosquitoes and giving Californians cancer? (No offense intended @davidwyby)

Ever try and chop down a tree with an Axe? Damn near impossible. At my age being able to down and buck an 18-to-24-inch tree in a few is incredible. There is a bit of a thrill but that goes away. What remains is the incredible work that can get done with limited effort and time.

When I was a kid, I used to send in cards from magazines for free catalogs of OPE and farm equipment. When I was 8 or 9 I asked my dad if I could have a chainsaw for my birthday and he looked at me like I had two heads. My mom thought WTF is wrong with a kid who wants to run the weed eater on a 100 degree day. Until I was in my late 20's, I seriously had no idea there were other people on planet Earth that liked OPE for reasons beyond a means to get work done. I'm still weird but at least I don't feel so bad about it anymore.

I came because I have been working on and fixing equipment since I was a 10 years old. I've always loved to fully understand how something works and dislike a mystery. I've read forums like this for all sorts of stuff over the years and I have a lot of respect for all the people who share their experience. My brother is slowly dragging me into the chainsaw world and now we are starting to have some problems that I need help to figure out. The answers don't always exist so I thought I would take a more active role in trying to learn.

I joined ope to gain more info on building my first 7900 (second saw) now I have a lot more than any 20 people need. I joined for the information but the people are what keep me coming back. I was floored by the generosity of so many members from doing fundraisers to sharing there porting recipes that they put a ton of time into to spending hours on the phone helping troubleshoot a saw they didn't even put together. The generosity, the knowledge and the people are why I spend my time here.
Swap the 7900 to 056 and the Same Story Story here.
I wish we had a "DITTO" emoj along with the thumbs 👍 UP option.

Plenty has changed here and a lot of the older guys have left or show up way less frequently. Lots of people here to help others and that’s what I try to do even though I have my moments of grumpy old guy and know that. I do miss some of the older members that took jokes well and gave them out knowing it was all in fun.
So TRUE ...sometimes triggers some kind of EMOTIONal feeling

Like pretty much everyone, I started on AS, wasn’t really in the loop about all the animosity going on between individuals or that they kicked a bunch of guys off but anyways I was up to Tree Monkey’s and he told me about this site, been here ever seen. Learned a bunch from everyone that’s for sure.

I can pick it up and carry it around and work on it in my heated basement shop. Parts are generally cheaper than on cars too :D

It doesn't hurt to hear them bark to life when you find them dead!
Totally agree. You're also not out by alot if you get them free or cheap and it doesn't work out. More parts for the next one. You can also hoard alot more of them in a smaller space than vehicles, which let's us get a little carried away.
