But… but.. but it’s got fuel injektion!!!! Cue the gurls losing their minds like it’s the latest boy band. It’s a good saw just over hyped. I get it though. If you don’t run saws day in and day out like we do it’s easy to be fooled by all the posers on The Toob.

WTF ??

I've been "around the block a few times" and I have been accused of being "out of the loop" a few times .................. but WTFrigg are you talking about ??????

According to some the 500i has the worst air filtration setup ever used on a chainsaw.

462c if a stihl dealer is closer or better, 572 if the husky dealer is closer or better. The 462 is a nice machine, so is the 572. Both have excellent filtration and antivibe. I used a 462 extensively when I worked in the industry and found it to be a great machine. At this point I've also used my 572 a great deal and find it to also be excellent. The 572 was more affordable to buy and I feel it oils more than a 462. It's a little less floppy than a 462 as well, in my opinion. Both start nicely as well.

Can't go wrong with either.

500i is nice, it's just too expensive in my opinion...and autotune/mtronic is complex enough for a chainsaw. Just one stupid guys opinions and thoughts.

We only have a couple of 462s in the parks , basically never had to deal with anything on them.
I have gotten 572s for a few parks and honestly they treat everyone pretty good as far as user friendly.
Things that have broken on them are the metal inserts in the tank when swapping out handles to full wrap and a metal pin freed itself in the recoil and found its way behind the flywheel magnet, luckily didn't catch the coil. So nothing catastrophic.
Personally I prefer the 372xp oe with minimal porting.

It’s an HD2 ………..

Thanks for answering !

To me, both the 661 & the 500i need a little extra to keep their respective covers tight, they’re definitely not the worst filtration systems I’ve seen or used

Outerwears has covers for them and they are the schnizzle, dust just rolls right off, air filter is unadulterated and air stays flowing.

If I was a logger and carried one saw I'd have a 500, it's a tweener for tree service guys. It can't pull a 36" like a 661 and it's really no different than a 462 with 20-28" bars plus it's as expensive as a 661 if not more in certain places.
I agree. Walking thru the woods with one saw all day felling trees a 500i would be a decent option.

Can you put a decent set of spikes on the 572 or does the captive nuts prevent that?
I happen to have a nib 572xpg. And a nib mk2 550xpg. And, your all orange ported mk1 550xpg looking pretty on the shelf! Possible I could be persuaded to let some go? I do need to thin the herd. Or do I? I dunno…

I own and/or use all of the Stihls on this list...no experience with the 572(it's almost all Stihls around here except those of us with 372s.) I'll echo what most have already said and say that the 462 or 572 would be the best bet for the OP. The 462 will work with a 28" in hardwoods, although it requires a light touch. I really appreciate the weight of the 462, as I'm limited to what I can hike with at work. It's light enough that I can easily brush/limb with it, yet enough power for falling decent sized trees. I run a 28" lwb on it; mostly deal with conifers, but occasionally cut oak, madrone, walnut, etc.

I have had two 462's before the update (supposed to be able to lean on them a bit more now) and ended up with a 500. I much prefer the rear handle of the 500 to the 462 and if you are running anything but the small dogs you will most likely notice the power difference unless you have a light touch. My 500 is very easy starting as well.

You can’t go wrong with the 500, imo. I have three of them and went from the 2171/046/460 to the 500. I skipped the auto tune/mtronic saws so can’t comment there.
They are excellent hardwood saws that can take down a 48” hardwood tree with a 24” bar.
If you need something larger well you have a 395.
