You can’t go wrong with the 500, imo. I have three of them and went from the 2171/046/460 to the 500. I skipped the auto tune/mtronic saws so can’t comment there.
They are excellent hardwood saws that can take down a 48” hardwood tree with a 24” bar.
If you need something larger well you have a 395.
The 500i is mtronic no?

Get with @Matt Schmitt for a new Stihl.

I haven’t ran one but I don’t see a 400 being impressive vs a ported 261.

If it were me, would come down to a 462 or 500i. I don’t like reading about the air filter and av spring issues on the 500i but it’s power to weight seems to be the top dog right now.

Technically I think it's just fuel injection, kinda like the difference between tbi( throttle body injection)and direct port fuel injection . M-tronic is only controlling a solenoid for the jets of a carburetor.

My 462 is my go-to lately for my daily logging of hardwoods here. It wears a 25” standard weight bar, full comp chain, and the only mod was a WCS bark box. It’s light, smooth, and as long as the chain is maintained, it cuts very well. Hard to beat for the money..

No experience with the 572, but it also sounds nice.

I like the 462 for the weight, but I do find myself grabbing my 572 more often. However the new 500 might be my favorite. I definitely seem to grab it a lot. The 572 seems a bit more torque than my 462, but the weight of it is definitely noticeable, I’d say the 572 is close to the 500 in weight if not heavier than it also.

It should probably be noted that my 462 is a standard carb model, not M-Tronic. And I still like it. Haven’t adjusted it yet. Cut all summer in 90 degree heat, and now in single digits. Honestly, it is the most forgiving saw tune-wise I’ve ever owned.

I agree. Walking thru the woods with one saw all day felling trees a 500i would be a decent option.

Every saw has an ideal application, I picked up the 500 I had from a dude that needed money for 1000 bucks, it had a bark box and looked like he ran it twice, I traded it to a dude on AS for another 661 Randi ported, I'd have another one if I was hiking all over the place with one saw, no doubt. These people make up scenarios and justifications for owning things that should be on a show about unicorns.

Steve doesn't need a 500i to cut firewood, Especially with what he already has.

I try to give people advice based on their application and use.

Ha yeah I hear ya. That was a good deal for you. And I don’t blame you for trading. A ported 661 makes more sense for your use. And I’m not sure anyone needs a 500i for firewood. Honestly in my area most people could get by with a good 60cc for all firewood duties. Instead they run around with a ms250 and a 066. Whatever floats the boat they say. But ya, 462/572 all the way.

It ripped pretty good with a 28" bar, but not 1500 bucks good...to me anyway..

I very seldom have interest in firewood that a 50-60cc saw can't handle, and I didn't get picked on enough to need a 90cc saw to cut a 15" firewood log. I don't overthink things, if I cut small wood I use a small saw and if I cut big wood I use a big saw. Ta-da.

I am very curious about the 500, does it have an ECU, does it tune using an O2 sensor? how fuel injected is it really, MAP senor TPS sensor, does it have the full works of a truely computer controlled style fuel injection, or is it some kind of mechanical/computer system?

found this little blurb on some promo material that covers it pretty simply.

Basically is has a couple sensors and hunts for highest rpm in the cut and adjusts accordingly. No MAF or O2 sensors. I know it has a heat sensor and a case pressure sensor.

They will fire and die without the impulse hose hooked up.

I’ll never get those 2 hours back
