Not really "on the bench," but it was my shop project today...added a couple of canless LED lights above the lathe and mill. I like the results:

That's a nice set up...

any ideas what caused this?
There was a lot of heat on that piston. I'm thinking straight gas or a serious air leak. What does the intake side look like?

My checklist would start with, check timing, is gas good and IMO ethanol free, proper heat range plug from reputable manufacturer. Was the saw/ dirty fins getting proper air flow to cool. And then air leaks.

I generally use PIG mat when working on/splitting a saw. This one had an unseen hole punched through the case from some jagoff using a long screw in the front handle. (I should have checked not the first time I've found this on a eBay saw) Not a big deal I can repair it easy enough...
Working on a axe handle & close to staining it & BLO.
Messy stuff.
I've done A LOT of gun Blueing & mixing Cerakote/Duracoat & it's just excellent for messy liquid stuff (lotso saw work also).
Just clean it off (or drain it lol), set it on a wall & you have your wood bench back.
Had to cover my stereo cause of the dust (sanding).

I was thinking water in fuel. Doesn’t it crater piston tops like that?
That’s exactly what I was thinking. Good fuel will separate from the water but rotting ethanol will hold a lot more in suspension. At that point it’s not really gasoline anymore. It’s a bunch of different chemicals. Some react with the aluminum. The piston swells and little bits tear off. Smearo destructo, adios bearings.

Pre-ignition/detonation looks slightly different. The whole crown is deeply jagged and cratered. Top of the chamber looks hammered to death as well.

Trying to help an old duffer out at work get his saw running.

Yeah! Went for 6 cuts and the flywheel side bearing locked.....
Now I'm going deep into it.
Fortunately I got a hankering for these now so called a friend who I've dealt with in the past and am probably going to pick up a few for myself.

If you used the same gradually worsening fuel every couple days or so, then after a few days or weeks, yes. But put a saw away with fuel in it and then use it a year or 2? 3? years later with that old fuel and it’ll eat the top off the exhaust side of the piston within a few minutes of hard run time.
