I bought this PM650 back a couple of weeks ago for $88 (a steal IMO).The seller knew nothing about it,so I took a chance.I got the saw & put a new fuel filter on it & a few pulls later it was running like a champ. The carb was way out of tune & got that situated.I went to shut it off & it didn't.I pulled the recoil/fan housing off & found the ignition wire had pulled out of the connector on the switch.I put a new connector on the wire & the switch worked as it should.I noticed that one of the screws that holds the fan housing/fuel tank on was broken off in the oil tank & another screw had been replaced by an oversized screw that had wallowed out the boss.I found another oil tank in my garage & replaced the damaged oil tank the other day. When I pulled the clutch off I noticed that it came off very easily & the thrust washer behind the clutch was missing.I lubed the needle bearing & put it al;l together & went to put a bar & chain on it & it wouldn't tighten the chaion at all.I pulled the newly added chain brake off that I had on hand from a Timber Bear (I really don't like the flag style chain brakes).Upon further investigation I found the adjuster pin was folded in half & was broken.I had to pull the clutch & cylinder jacket off again & replace the adjuster pin with the original screw assembly that was on the saw.All back together again with the bar & chain. The saw fired right back up again & it seems to be oiling as it should

Mine certainly does not look like that...as it arrived:

20200305_101320.jpg

I gave it a pretty good going over.

20200305_135231.jpg

It did look a little better when I finished. It ran but I didn't take it to the woods...

There were 2 versions, the Le Sabre and the Thrifty Mac. I have heard of some of the differences but I can't remember precisely what they were. I think among other things, the Thrifty Mac had some yellow and black plaid trim on it. According to Mike Acres site the D-33 Le Sabre was released 6/56 and discontinued 9/56, the Thrifty Mac 35 was released in '57 and discontinued in '58.

I had not seen or heard the claim of those models being McCulloch's first direct drive saw. The D-44 was also released in 1956 so it may be a pretty fine line.

Hey Gang,

Thanks to Chance Would, I've got some new McCulloch 2 Man 5-49/1225 gasket and diaphragm kits available. This kit covers most of the 7-55 minus the Carb body gasket (still waiting to get one of those for replication).

Diaphragms are ready to bolt in and run....No rivets, No original diaphragm disassembly, or original diaphragm required.

Each kit includes 3 transmission shims (2x .015", and 1x .025").

Free shipping in the USA.

Thanks,

Brian

That looks to be the 4 HP air cooled outboard based on the 80 or 87 cc block. I think in reality there are very few parts that would work on a saw.

Everybody must be working outdoors this week....

This is still the McCulloch Chainsaw thread.

Cutting wood with my 1-46 several years ago.

1-46 Action.JPG

Same tree, 1-85 got some work.

1-85 Action 1.JPG

I was helping a friend last year clear a property so he could build a 3 unit condominium. The Junk Yard Dog SP125 was pressed into service.

SP105 bucking an ash some years ago. I believe that saw is currently in the display.

The 7-10 still gets used a good bit. This was a few years ago clearing some trees so the county Humane Society could add on.

This one came in on Saturday. Guy said his uncle wanted it cleaned up and operational again.

20250426_120711.jpg

Made it to the bench yesterday. Rather dirty inside and out.

20250428_152445.jpg

Took a while but I got it cleaned up pretty well.

20250429_110328.jpg

Failed pressure test so I had to pull it down further. This is an early SP80 equipped with thick rings and the bearing insert has a retaining ring rather than a dowel pin to position it.

The piston and cylinder are in pretty good condition but the rings were questionable so I replaced them (PN 85245). The early 82 cc models have one large open transfer port on either side, later ones had a divider added.

PM 805 for reference.

For whatever reason, the lip of the oil tanks on the 10 Series often suffer over time so I try to flatten them with emery cloth on a marble tile.

Going back together nicely.
